We have road blocks also in Canada. That is fine, but the police:

- randomly stops a vehicule out of every 2 to 5 ( they create a " funnel" down to one line ). They do not stop all vehicules.

- driver of vehicule stopped is aked general questions ( ie: did you have a drink? how long ago?...) to see if the driver is or seems intoxicated . If they think he is, they ask the driver to blow in a alcohol detection device.

- The driver has the right to refuse, and only then can the policeman put him under arrest if he really looks drunk, but still no test...

- In no time, aside from arrest, will they ask your name or documents such as driver's licence.

The purpose of those road blocks are to catch drunken drivers, period.
:)

At CHP road blocks, each car is not stopped, as they don't want traffic buildups. In California it is against the law to drive without a current driver license on your person, current registration of the car, and proof of insurance. Police are required by law to ask for these three items when you are stopped for any reason. If you do not have anyone of the three the Police have the right to have your car towed and impounded. Not every Policeman will perform this check, most will, some will also only cite you and will not have your car towed or impounded.

While I am not in agreement with the design of the patriot act, I think the intentions where meant well. But by comparing this bill with Nazi Germany standards is a gross over statement. Hitler was a dictator he didn't need no fancy bill to slaughter jews and enforce law.

they dont do it every night.

but definitely on nights such as big high school dances, or Saint Patricks day, or 4th of July even, why?

to fucking keep DRUNK DRIVERS off the road.

nothing to do with terrorits or keeping tabs on the cities people.

New Orleans is known for what? Its ALCOHOL and Mardi Gras, if you think for a minute they dont wait for those times to set up road checks to help keep drunks off the road you are surely mistaken, this has been going on forever.

turn off cnn for a second and think.

everything we do is NOT because of TERRORISM or BIG BROTHER>

i know i feel safer driving during mardi gras knowing they will at least TRY to help keep drunk drivers off the road, i guess you dont care about those things, I do.

road traps are only used at certain times, its not a regular practice, and no doubt, the 'fear' of them keep many home instead of out drinking and driving, and i guess thats good enough.

and its not a big deal, all the ones I have been involved in, you dont even get out of your car.

You simply hold your drives license to the window as you drive by slowly.

my car at the time had a sunroof, i held my id out the top, the cop didnt even stop me fully, but waved me pass.

man my rights were sooo violated.

hahaha

If a guy looks drunk pull him over. Why do they need to establish a check point if the majority of the people aren't doing nothing wrong. I guess I have been sterotyped by my looks as being some crinimal. They think because I am young and that I dress nice and drive a nice car that they need to search my car for a hour because I am probably a drug dealer

You obviously don't know how Nazi Germany did their thing.

They didn't come into Poland and say "Hey, all you jews, there's the ovens jump on in"..

First jews were just not allowed in some places.
Then they were only allowed to keep so much cash.
Then they had to wear armbands.
Then they had to live in the (walled) ghetto.
Then they started getting executed for sport.
Then they started getting shipped off to death camps.

It's never all in one step. Freedom dissapears gradually, with very few noticing it is doing so, until one day, it is ALL gone.

I agree it is somewhat unfair to compare it to Hitler, but it is very much in the same vein. There are certain "undesirables" that don't have the rights of the "good" (aryan) citizens - and thus they don't get any, we get to treat them however we like. Plus with the handy little amendment to the Freedom of Information Act, NO ONE CAN CHECK TO SEE IF IT'S BEING ABUSED!

There's no way anyone should be supporting this legislation. This is the kind of shit WW2 vets died to prevent happening.

As Fletch and I have stated this is not anything new. I am forty-five and it has been that way all of my life and actually in California it is done less than in years past.

Well it seems like they are doing it more frequently where I am from.

BY theory isnt the Amber Alert System another Big brother communication tool?

Id say so.

I see them flashing things all the time on the freeways here.

I bet they start running commercials on it within a year.

I admit I never studied Nazi Germany in vast detail. However I still believe that Hitler would simply have someone killed if they where a suspected terrorist anti-nazi. Before he was even in power he had a squad of men that inflicted political violence. I have learned a little from reading about the rise of Hitler and the break of WW2.
I still think your perspective reguarding the patriot act is extreme. But I agree small steps build up to somewhere over time.

Admit it .....

You saw "the Pianist" ....

Opens your eyes how those taken for granted freedom ( or rights! from "Charter of Rights") can be taken away so slowly but so surely...
to finally execute over 6 millions Jews and other "undesirable" to the government ...
