This is for a social site catering to a mommy club where women will talk about raising families, child birth, etc.

Obviously my 1st choice is .com but it's not available.

It may depends on domain name itself and how it will be pronounced with the .org/net

.org proclaims authority, you are an organization, you have a team of 10,000 people behind your brand and you mean business!

Any other answer will ignore this fact, please take this into account.

As one person said, this is an early 2000's question.
Today, for a lot of people it's .com or nothing.
So I was questioning the idea of going with .org

If both are available, just grab them both.

If you can only get 1 I would go with the .net.

Being honest, I wouldn't want either of those extensions nowadays. All I will register is the .com and/or .co.uk if my project is purely aimed at the UK market.
Stating the obvious but so many .com's gone and I would rather be creative with the name so to try and get a .com instead of a weaker exten.

What he said. There are a lot of extensions now. So I wouldn't get hung up on net or org. You have to promote it anyway so if not com, it doesn't matter.

Between the two I would go with .net for something adult. .org sounds like PBS or Gov.org etc.

But I would take a dash in a dot com before either choice.

It would depend on who owns the .com

I brought a heap of financial related domains in the late 90's, I got rid of all the .coms and .nets but fucked if I can sell the .orgs for what I want.

To 13.5% of the population. I’ve only ever heard one group of people ever proffer the notion that a.org has more authority. If it can be purchased by you & me it has no authority. A .edu or .gov are the only domains with authority. As for a website? Both suck but a .net is better. Buy both.

If the .com is already taken AND being actively used I probably would steer clear of buying the .net/.org/.anything. You could run into some tradename issues AND/OR cause confusion from those trying to get to your site and ending up on the .com.

On a side-note, whenever I buy a new domain name, I always use namecheckr and see if the name is available on the big socials (Twitter, FB, Instagram, YouTube) before buying.. if they're not, I almost always refrain from buying it, even if the .com is available.

also, be wary of who .com belongs to. If it's a site that already does all that you plan to do, you may be in legal trouble to try to develop that brand.

When I registered my company 11 years ago, the .com was taken and I went for .net w/o hesitation. Fun fact: the dot com is still unused, still for sale..like it was 11 years ago..

Domains ending with NET are usually intended for networking services and internet service providers such as Comcast or AT&T's residential email addresses. ORG domains are usually intended for non-profit organizations. However, there's nothing legally preventing anyone from using.
