Seagate Barracuda 4...anyone use them?

I need new drives for my computer. Quiet drives....It is not a gaming machine, just photoshop and video editing.
I want to get 3 Seagate Barracuda 4's, as they are ATA 100, my mb only supports up to ATA 100. ATA 133 drives would be a waste as I couldn't use their potential

So, these barracudas are supposed to perform reasonable, and are dead quiet, which is important to me. But would 3 in a normal case overheat? I hear they get hot....only thing stopping me from buying them is overheating.

It would defeat the purpose of buying quiet drives if I have to buy noisy fans to cool them.

Thanks!

Could you put 3 in a case without burning it down and no extra fans?

Cool, I will buy them then. The drives in my current computer spin so loud it is driving me nuts...

I got one too, I don't know about using 3 without a fan. But buying SG Barracuda's because they're quiet and then putting a fan in defeats the purpose...

Would you run 3 without cooling them?

What do you mean by stacked? Stacked one on top of the other, or stacked in the drive bays in a tower seperated by a couple of inches each? The tower they are going into is a mid tower with 4 bays. Cd burner in the top bay, and one drive in each bay underneath the burner.

Stacked as in less than an inch apart.

I'd say that's standard for any drive...

That's for sure, I recently bought an 80-gig Western Digital 8-meg Special Edition and I'll agree, it is VERY VERY quiet

I'm using the same 80 gig in an external USB 2.0 setup and I can't hear it across my desk.

Hmm...that was my second choice. I know it out performs that Seagate. Price is only $20 more up here per drive....

Look at the specs man....I did that before I bought the SG...if I recall correctly, they're both around the same noise level in idel, but the SG is slightly quieter while seeking.

Seagate hard drives are great in my experience in either ide or SCSI flavors. They are quiet and reliable, I still have a few older Seagate Cheetah 10k RPM SCSI drivers running for about 5 years now non stop without any problems.

also you should use some kinds of hard drive fans to cool them down as they get pretty hot.

That's my problem. I want a quiet PC. Buying quiet drives and using fans to cool them defeats the purpose. May just go with WD SE's....

The hard drive fans I use are low RPM, enough to cool the drive without making noticable noise, you just have to make sure that they are hard drive fans (they are mounted on a special rack/bracket) as any other ones are most likely high RPM which create some noise. BTW WD are good also but I found them to have a bit less performance than Seagate or Maxtor. Its definetly your call so good luck shopping

here is a link with Hard Drive Fans

Get something that spins at 1500rpm or change the voltage from 12 to 7.
