Attended my first funeral today.

A good friend of mine died in a car crash last week. He was only 20 years old. My youthful belief in immoratality is very quickly fading away. Very sobering.

Up until now, i've been really lucky in that respect. Besides David, none of my friends have died, and none of my family members have died, not even my granparents. So, this is the first time i've ever lost someone close to me.

I'm only 19, and i guess i've still got that "it'll never happen to me" attitude. I guess you stop believing that when you get a little older.

thing is that you don't...you (or atleast I do) go between periods of thinking "it will never happen to me" and "when in the hell will this stop happening to me".

the mortality thing can be sobering.

I'm 29 and never been sick or in a hospital in my life, and 2 days ago I ended up in the emergency room with 210/110 blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, extreme nausea, and dehydration. They thought I was having a cerebral hemmorhage. They put me in the high risk ward for 36 hours.. , twice daily EKG's, 24 hour heart monitoring, chest x-rays, 3-4 sets of blood tests, and a CAT scan to make sure I wasn't having a stroke.

I was surrounded by people in various stages of dying from strokes, heart attacks, various forms of heart faliure and recovering from open heart surgery. The bed I was put in was empty because they'd wheeled its previous occupant to the morgue an hour or two before I arrived.

Not fun...

Luckily there was nothing seriously wrong with me other than some mild underlying hypertension and anxiety problems that I have to take medication l for.. and I have to quit drinking for a couple of weeks.. but fuck, I seriously thought I was a goner.

Sorry to hear that, I lost my grandfather last year, and it was my first funeral I had attended. I remember touching the body and how cold it was, pretty scarey.

Chodadog....my thoughts are with you.

When I was growing up, LSD was a popular drug....I think I attended more funerals in high school and college than at any other time of my life....gave me a whole different perspective on living.....

My son is your age..nineteen..he also believes in the magical myth that he's immortal....even though he's never been sheltered from the reality of death....
