Also to help weaken and cater views in support of those who helped from the outside. When the US or Russia attempts to install "friendly" leaders into other countries they are doing it for that exact reason..because that leader is friendly to their wants/needs.

society and nation gets "properly weakened" when its divided and has strong polarization of the views and then you may enter with your own agendas and goals...as a foreign power.

us enemies are not living 200 years in the past. they know how to use the weapon of fake news and public relation.
there are everywhere in world guys smart enough to know that they can´t destoy us from outsite. and why do the have to fly more planes into towers if they just can throw one half of the americans to the other half ?

BTW this kind of "destroy yourself strategy" is invented by the US goverments - they do that since centuries and they do not even keep it secret.
why should there be a moral border for any kind of enemy not to use the same weapons back? in a country with a few thousand entertainmet channels and just a handful of serious news chanels it would be much harder to explain people that "ghost stories" is just a fiction soap as to tell them trump is the new messias.
