Ocean's 13: Why did Terry Benedict try to steal the diamonds?

Clooney's crew hits up Terry Benedict for $ 36M or so to finance the drill, and Terry states: "I want you to double my investment and I also want you to steal his diamonds." He also states: "I don't care what you do with them, I just want him to lose what is important to him."

Now, IF Terry wanted the diamonds for himself, he could've easily said during the negotiation, "I want the diamonds." But he didn't.

So what changed his mind? Why at the end of the heist does Terry send his 'French partner in crime' to steal the diamonds on the roof top? If he wanted them, all he had to do was ask at the time of the investment.

Did I miss something or is this just a hole in the script?

he wanted to have the diamonds taken to hit the other guy in the pocket, so that guy lost everything...

& he wanted to steal them from Clooney´s crew because he still held a vendetta from Oceans 12

Yes, but he didn't have to steal them. All he had to do was ask for them during the investment negotiation. Why go to all the trouble of stealing them from the crew, when he could've just asked for them? The crew didn't need or want the diamonds to begin with, so Terry wasn't 'fucking them over' by stealing them.

I think at the beginning of negotiations, Terry said, if the diamonds weren´t part of the deal he wasn´t going to fund the op & he´d have wanted the money, all the money, so Clooney´s crew would have come out with nothing if the fox would have got the diamonds.

well, they never made it clear how much money the crew was getting for the stunt, so there is no way to determine IF the crew needed the diamonds to help defray Terry's investment, but I'm sure the crew wouldn't mind having the stones for profit reasons.

But that doesn't explain why Terry just didn't ask for them up front if he wanted them so badly. The crew never stated: "OK, we are keeping the stones." The crew never said, "ok, we'll double your investment and we keep the diamonds."' That line would've set it all straight, but that was never spoken.

Had that been the reason, THEN, I could totally see Terry wanting to steal the diamonds, because the crew was relying on them to defray the cost of Terry's investment, thus giving Terry more reason to steal them, to fuck over the crew to satisfy some lingering anger from Ocean's 12.

But, none of this was really made clear in the film and the hole in the script is still there.

My guess is he said they can keep the diamonds because he knew that there would be some costs involved to pull off the heist - he's a reasonable businessman.

Clooney said omg, diamonds aswell, Terry said, yep, only way...

So if Clooney hadn´t got the diamonds, he´d have had to forfeit the whole money or he woudln´t have funded it from the start, hence the diamonds being stolen, or Terry hoping they were going to be stolen from Clooney...

so Clooney would´ve have nothing, but of course, they´be bad ass crew

Sorry, but Terry never said he 'wanted' the diamonds. He stated clearly, 'double my investment' and '1st money in, 1st money out' and wanted the crew to steal the diamonds or no deal. Terry then made it clear, "I don't care what you do with them..." and said he wanted Banks to lose something that was important to him.

IF Terry wanted the diamonds, all he had to do was say so....put it in the investment conditions.... But he only wanted the crew to steal them to hurt Banks and stated he didn't care what happens to the diamonds.

So again, why did Terry attempt to steal the diamonds from the crew?
