Why do people take celebrity deaths so personally ??
I keep reading or hearing people say 2016 was a horrific year. You ask why and then they rhyme off a few celebrity names who happened to pass that year. Then you ask "oh right so that's why 2016 was personally a bad year for YOU?"
Forgetting Trump for a minute (we know everyone has views on that and how that took over 2016 for the large part) but people seem to genuinely base a good or bad year for them personally on what fucking celebs died. Feels like half my family have serious health issues just now, and thankfully all got through 2016, but this year is gonna be very testing get for the whole family and we will see who comes through it or not. Gonna be a tough year. Very tough. I don't give a fuck if Prince died. I didn't know him and he sure as fuck didn't know me. I think we need to sometimes step away from the celeb world and worry more about our own family and friends first. |

The end of the year retrospective is always prompted my the media, and in turn people talk about who died that year, the main events of the year, etc. Prince, George Michael, David Bowie, Carrie Fisher (Pincess Leia), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and others dying last year is just a reminder of our generations mortality. I have no family but for my son, for which I'm so grateful, so I can't relate to you watching your family go through health issues, I'm sorry to hear that and I hope it turns out well. We're all on our way out, it's just a matter of time let's enjoy life! |

These deaths feel so personal because they resonate with us on a deeper, psychological level. We may grieve celebrities because our dream was to emulate their career path or because a celebrity death can also remind us of our mortality.

there are deaths every year, but the point is that 2016 and already 2017 has had an increase of deaths in well known characters or celebrities.
Although, I asked the same question in a thread of mine the other day. I was asking, is it an increase in deaths, or just in known persons. Still being an average of deaths? This year alone, There was a 200% increase of deaths on the 1st of January

I liked Prince's purple rain album but not much after that, so him dying wasn't a big deal but still sucked a bit. Now on the other hand back when Kurt Cobain died, that was a bigger loss to me because he was in his prime and I enjoyed all of his music and expected more. |

It's simple. The art performed by actors and singers make us happy, or sad, and move us in all kinds of ways. We fall in love with the characters they portray or the music they create. When they die, some people feel that loss as if it was a loss from their own family.
This feeling is made worse when the loss was especially tragic (too young, accidental, etc), or when its really really fucked up such as the death of Debbie Renynolds death right after her own daughter's death. People cry over the death of a character in a movie or TV show, so why not the actor too? It's an interesting phenomena that I'll never understand.

It's just a passing RIP as far as I am concerned. Celebrity never impressed me -- however -- some that die I respect their talent and what they gave my world. But I am not depressed or shedding tears usually by celebrity deaths ... Life goes on until it stops -- make the most of it.

I think a lot of people grow up watching these guys on tv idolizing them looking up to them enjoying them etc and feel close to them in a way.

Not all people for sure. I don't give a shit about celebrities. If one dies: say regular "RIP" and move on - I have a zero care about all of them. Course(!) if I didn't know them personally: if they were not my friends and relatives. Everybody else is free to die when he/she want - they are just nothing in my life.

I remember when Florence Henderson died last year I felt it a little. I watched her alone everyday growing up and saw what a Mom was like. It was more about taking me back to that time in my life watching her than her as an actual person. Weird I just remembered that.

I typically don't care about the vast majority of celeb deaths - but a few over the years depressed me because I enjoyed their work and their artistry left a lasting impact on me.
Robin Williams was one. Freddie Mercury another. Brad Delp (Boston). |

I dug Prince, George Michael, Bowie etc... Don't think it's a oh my God my best friend just died but more of damn I been listening to that shit for decades and music always reminds ya of good or bad times as there's a jam out there for any situation, so more of damn everyone from my younger years is dying off so guess I'll be gone soon too, Happy New Year!
I'm not a big facebook guy due to watching family/friends post what they eat for lunch, post how thankful they are for their spouse, repost uplifting photos, repost and you'll find money, etc... Nobody gives a shit about 99% of the stuff the average facebook tard posts. Quality over quantity rule should be applied cause if you're not a hot chick posting selfies I don't pay too much attention. |

Celeb deaths don't bother me too much. I was a fan of Bowie, George Michaels, Prince.... Great, fire up Apple Music and listen to their songs and move on.

I was bummed when Jerry Garcia died but strangely I was more upset when Brent Mydland died five years earlier. Not sure why. Getting more callous as I age, I guess.

It depends on the celeb. Some have been a part of my life for a long time. If only their music or films, that entertained me.

People associate music, movies theatre etc. with certain points in their life. When someone dies then that affects the good memory. Also if you have a celebrity that consistently puts out good stuff - we feel loss as to what could have been if they survived.

I am not a fan of the pedestal that people create for celebrities either, especially ones who haven't done anything to earn it, but I can still empathize if something bad happens to them. I would hope you would be able to as well. but yeah, i am tired of people who claim 2016 was an exceptionally bad year because of that, that doesn't make sense at all.

I'm oddly pleased in a way though, I like the fact we aren't all exactly the same, and don't have the same emotions for the same specific things. I still roll my eyes of course when I read on facebook that somebody cried because george michael died, that's just the cunt in me I suppose. |

Exactly. I hate it when I see that a celebrity died and some of my friends on Facebook (who never actually cared about them) start to post "RIP xy, you'll be missed" or "why did you have to leave us" without even knowing who the person actually was. Society is fucked up, thanks to social media...

the thing that makes us human is our ability to imagine. celebs & disney all sell their talents in this space, & cash big checks. ergo its logical that people create a part of their lives around their entertainments, that bring joy. & the death of a celeb that resides in that happy space in the imagination can be tough to deal with. |
