Do dedicated Servers have an expiration date

    Do dedicated Servers have an expiration date

    I have a 5 or 4 year old dedicated server , my provider now offers cheaper, faster and bigger servers, but is to much of a hassle to change servers.

    Question when will my dedicated server die, I would only change servers if it was about to die.

    I change personal computers every 3 years regardless of state just to avoid suddend failures.

      Hard to say. I got same server for like 10 years. Only once hard drive started to fail and it was replaced within 30 min.

          Well... depending on your provider company they or don't do some updates on your server. But of course there are new dedicate servers that are way powerful and maybe at a cheapest price than the one you have. I would recommend to change your dedicate server once in a while maybe each 2 years would be good.

              Mine have always run for many years as good equipment and anything that fails can be replaced but at some point if issues become more frequent they would probably cycle ya out to a new server and retire the old one.

              If time has passed and you're finding the exact same specs/management for a much cheaper price there is your leverage to hit them up for either a better $ deal to retain ya or assistance in swapping your server to a newer machine. Some companies upgrade all clients when they do lower pricing or spec increases and others let the newbies get the best recent deals and let their old time clients sit on ancient equipment for twice the price. Squeaky wheel gets the grease so doesn't hurt to say something and see if they wanna keep ya around with a discount or migration to a newer machine.

                      Some older scripts might not work when you upgrade servers. So double check this first.

                      If that's not a problem, then upgrade. Its a no brainer.
                      Faster and more secure server and you'll save some money too !

                      The hosting company will take care of the migration, so you have no worries. Downtime will be minimal.

                      If you decide against upgrading get your host to review your current pricing. They will no doubt give you a better deal.

                          You can ask for an upgrade (usually every 2-3 years).

                              it depends on your scripts requirements, sometimes old script don't work with new versions

                              as for me I would keep the same server if the server can handle mywebsite traffic and my script perfectly without forgetting doing steady backups every now and then

                                  For the most part they are pretty reliable. Much more so than I've found with AWS instances or something like that. I've had hard drives will die once or twice. Best to make sure you have everything backed up to another server (preferably backed up to another location too) and can redeploy another server ASAP in the event you need to.

                                  It's generally a good idea to upgrade every few years.

                                      The quality of hardware will make a difference as well. Some cheap hosts use lesser quality hardware. Always make sure you get enterprise hardware, and definitely enterprise grade disk drives. Otherwise it's more like a case of how soon before it fails versus "if it will fail".

                                          hard drives have a max recommended lifespan of 5 years. when we ran single servers, we updated them every 2 years. now that we built our own massive private cloud network, we can switch out hard drives and servers on the fly without any downtime.

                                          moral of the story, you should just move your sites to PornCMS
