Webserver on your own PC
Hey,
What's the best stuff to install on your own PC to make it a web server? I'm just looking to be able to hit my IP with a name/pw from anywhere on the net, so I can grab a file off if I need it. I'm trying Xitami but with no such luck. Running XP Pro as well. Kevin

Also I'm running on a dynamic IP right now...what I'd like to do is just write a script to send my IP to one of my webservers, so I go to domain.com/myip/ and it always has my fresh IP. Is this the best way to go about doing this?

To install..
Insert the Windows XP Professional CD-Rom into your CD-Rom Drive From your Start Button, go to Settings, and Control Panel In the Control Panel window select Add/Remove Programs In the Add/Remove window select Add/Remove Windows Components In the Wizard window check Internet Information Services, click OK An Inetpub folder will be created on your harddrive Open the Inetpub folder, and find a folder named wwwroot Create a new folder, like "MyWeb", under wwwroot. Make sure your Web server is running - The installation program has added a new icon on your task bar (this is the IIS symbol). Click on the icon and press the Start button in the window that appears. |

Nah IIS is a bitch for noobs to install..
Trust me, my other business is constantly getting calls from peeps trying to set it up and end up rogering their system.. A very simple program is Analog X.. Its freeware, and is very small and extremely stable.. All you do is point analog X to a directory on ya pc where your internet site it located.. and on the html have a link to the text file.. Very simple.. Big Nath |

Install it like ztik suggests. Then right click on the directory containing your website, choose Properties, select the "web sharing" tab, and give it a name under your default website. If your network card has a fixed IP address, you can now access it at YOURIP/thename. Test it with http://COMPUTERNAME/thename You don't even have to go into IIS Admin to set it up.
