Glad they rerouted it. Common sense. Now at least only "terrorists" will be blowing it up not the Indians too

I'm not sure if I'd say "America: 1" It's coming out that the govt was doing some illegal shit to the protesters. They were setting up fake WiFi hot spots and DDOSing the supporters wifi's then when people would connect to the open wifi their phones were getting hacked.

They were also reportedly using stingray systems against the protesters in an attempt to cut their internet connections off, so news from the site couldn't get out. All this was being done with out warrants.

The ACLU has filed lots of freedom of information acts against the govt/state to try and find out what they were doing. Should be interesting what comes out of this and if any govt/state agencies are found to have broken the law.
In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.

Yeah, Hope they build a nice casino next to the lake. And maybe some high end stores and wal-mart for all the visiting celebs and protestors in town.

Too much oil being pumped around anyways. Too much glut. Need to move it all by rail and drive the price of oil back up. Worried BP won't keep paying their 60 cent dividend. I would like to stop all the fracking. This OPEC deal isn't gonna do anything. When oil is this cheap, every country is gonna pump oil down to nothing a barrel. It is all they know. Don't drill, baby don't drill (or frack).

I would rather have a train that crashes and causes damage that we know of right away and can take action against immediately than an underground pipe that could leak for years, poisoning the soil and water and slowly killing everyone in the area before we even know it is happening.

normally i would agree but after cases like lac megantic where 50 people were basically vaporized when a improperly parked train got lose and rolled down a hill..its just not a good way to transport such materials. i am not a fan of pipelines either though i thought most oil pipelines are above ground.

moving stuff by train isn't very efficient, it burns oil, causes pollution, CO2 emissions, costs more, etc... so it's certainly debatable if theoretical scenario ("pipe could leak for years") is worse than transporting oil by train which we know for a fact causes pollution and has many risks as well (could derail, etc)...

can you imagine if for example water to your house wasn't delivered by a pipe, but instead transported by a truck once a week? wouldn't that seem very inefficient, and anyone who would even consider that plan would be labeled as nuts?

clearly water is not the same as oil, oil has some additional risks, but the point is, that not using a pipeline is ridiculously inefficient...

truth is that a pipeline is a no brainer, but some groups are stirring shit up because there is ton of $$ at stake... one of them for example might be Warren Buffet, who happens to own a railway company and is now making some serious bank transporting oil by train... it's probably why he is one of few billionaires who supports democrats...

"save the environment" is just a convenient argument to stir things up, but reality is that just like most other issues it's all about $$$... some groups will make ton of $$$ from this pipeline, others will lose a ton...

Unfortunately, both are bad. Pipelines break, trains crash. Oil needs to flow, but I wish they would impose tougher regulations on all of this. Make pipelines and tankers thicker, improve sensing technology to detect problems, etc.

What I would especially love to see is some legal requirements to make oil companies act faster to stop a disaster, properly clean up the mess, and restore the land and water to more-than pristine condition. Expensive yes, but they can afford it.

The best of course is to find more and more ways to move away from this form of energy. It's just old, and dirty, and expensive, and inefficient... bah.

That's quite a stretch. And besides, the pipeline is already built. It's where the last part of the pipe was to be built that is the major issue.

It's a bit more than that. Nobody, except real scumbags, want to see the environment destroyed. Oil disasters are an ugly, terrible and tragic thing.

there is no "they can afford it", if it costs "them" more to transport, it will cost "you" more when you buy it... so "you" will pay for it, not "them"...

of course no one wants the environment to be destroyed, but we need to accept some risk to achieve progress... one side leans towards no risk / no progress (lets continue transporting oil by train)... while other side is open to accepting risk in order to achieve progress (pipeline is more efficient, so lets build one)...

can you imagine if for example water to your house wasn't delivered by a pipe, but instead transported by a truck once a week? wouldn't that seem very inefficient, and anyone who would even consider that plan would be labeled as nuts?

clearly water is not the same as oil, oil has some additional risks, but the point is, that not using a pipeline is ridiculously inefficient...
Allow me to clarify my position.

We should focus ourselves and do everything in our power to be off oil power as quickly a possible. Fossil fuels like coal and oil are the energy sources of the past. We need to focus on clean, renewable energies and how to maximize our use of them. Any time you deal with oil and gasoline there are risks. I haven't done the research to see if pipelines leaking or trains derailing or getting into accidents is more dangerous, but if it were up to me we would be spending every day trying our hardest to get away from oil so we didn't have to worry about either.

So, in the meantime, I would rather know about a problem as soon as it happens than have it happen and maybe not know about it until the damage is catastrophic.
