How many dogs have you put down in life? How do you deal with it?

I know the time is coming soon for the dog my son has had since a kid, we had to put her older partner in crime down 2 years ago this month.

How many have you put down? How to you make it an easier process for all involved?

I've only ever owned one dog, going on fourteen years now. She's been great. She is a black lab, and was part guard dog, protector of our child, and also used to ensure our child would not be afraid of dogs. If there was any odd noise outside she would bark, and when ever my child is home my dog follows around the kid - even to the point where the dog sleeps right outside my kid's room.

She's older now and going deaf, but still loves running with me.

Like losing a child. One of the hardest things to do but you know when it's time. I don't want them to suffer for my selfishness

Tough thing to do, best you can do is to think of the animal's quality of life and make the decision based on that and not how hard it is for you.

I've done it a couple of times and it's a heart-breaker. But I just kept it together and did what had to be done. In the end, it's a gift to let a sick or suffering pet go.

My condolences.

Uuuuuugh! I remember going to the humane society to look at dogs years ago and after I got in my car to go home they were wheeling out this huge big blue barrel and you could see the fur of the dead animals popping out of the top. You're a good guy to do that job cleaning up and taking care of them. Throwing out the dead ones had to fuck with your head! How long you work there?

My lab is 9 so hopefully he has another good 5 or 6 years him. The thought of saying goodbye is tough and I'll probably need a few days to recover.

I know someone who spent $20,000 on cancer treatments which went nowhere, and while I didn't say anything to them I felt bad for the dog who had to keep on living a shitty life because of a human's selfishness. For one thing, I don't have $20k laying around -- and even if I did I wouldn't use it to extend a pet's life. I love my boy, but I can always get another one that looks just like him.

that soul crushing feeling when the dog stops moving in your hands...the only thing that made it easier was that their suffering was over and that they never knew about the finality of life so they were not afraid...donate a ton of food to animal shelters when you feel bad about it, it cures the pain better than alcohol or drugs...

2 years i met Marge from pets on parade (R.I.P.) the animals i had to load in a big ass dump truck in the back. i could feel their bodies through the bags. i remember that shit very well. after that gig 12 hour shifts at shamrock foods. over there i would do 24 hrs sometimes. then i heard about the guy worked 3 days straight fell out and died. they never close so it can be tempting

None yet. My Lab is almost 13 now and things are starting to happen to him. He was a 21st birthday gift from my mum, he is like a son to me and I hate to think about the day he passes away. He has given me the most happiness that any one thing could give. He still acts like a puppy at times but not for very long now, he gets tired easily and has trouble with stairs.

I will miss him more than anything in my life when he goes but I'll remember all the crazy, fun, shitty stuff he brought me.

That's something no one probably ever thinks about...a dog has no idea what life or death is.

Hopefully the next one will not be such a neurotic mess. I love him for all his little quirks, but he's the Woody Allen of dogs. It would be cool if he didn't think about jumping into the pool and just did it like most dumb, fearless dogs do.

Our female dog grieved the death of her 10 year partner (they were together since she was 3 months old) it was very jarring, she couldn't be left alone without yelping and would always look around the house for him sniffing and whining, it lasted for a few weeks. 2 years later if you say his name in conversation her ears perk up and she looks around.

Here's Moose as a puppy, hours from death with Parvo. My Vet suggested I put him down to put him out of his suffering... I trust Vets like I trust other lawyers...

I said absolutely not. I spent $800 on two doses of Neupogen - a human white cell booster - I bought from a oncologist under the table and here's Moose today...

Three and it never gets any easier. I have two 6 yr old labs from the same litter an know it will be bad when their time is up. The cat on the other hand is an asshole and I have the vet on speed dial for his ass!

Pornlaw, parvo is a nasty fucker. I was able to beat it with two of our pups years ago with pedialyte, scrabbled eggs and sardines. The vet also told us that putting them down was the only option..Well, love and care shines thru every time. Moose beat the odds~!

2. How do you make it easier? Get another one. I''m not trying to diminish your loss but as george carlin said, "life is a series of dogs."
