cgi error, any help?

Hi all,

I edited my mail.cgi file and when I went to go upload it and access that file in my browser, the file does not come up? Does anyone know what I need to do w/ that file? permissions, etc.

If the permissions are the problem you are having, then setting them to chmod 755 should correct your problem.

Hope this helps. Later.

I used both 755 and then 777 for that file and still doesn't show up. The error is that I get redirected to my 400+ files. (403,404, etc)

404 means page not found. 403 means access forbidden.
And, if you leave your .cgi's chmod 777 please give me the URL to all of them. I am bored....

I don't have ICQ.
While you are setting up this script, disable your redirection. It will be less frustrating. Also, if you have access to Apache error logs, that will tell you exactly what is wrong.
If you are not getting a 500 internal error message, it is not your script.
You have to find out which 40* error message you are getting. If it is a 404, then it means that the page can't be found.

Check what you changed. It is always something mondaine like a forgotten ;

ALos if you call your script using telnet or SSH you will see the error message and the line where it occured.

Actually, the only thing I changed was the name of my mailing list (just added a couple letters).

Wasn't anything major (or code related).

Check the permissions on the directory the .cgi is in. If it isn't directly in the cgi-bin, or in a directory such as /cgi-bin/mail you may have to change the /mail directory to 777
Double check your paths in the cgi file. A wrong path can give a 500.
If there are any text files that have to be written to, make sure the permissions are set properly on them.
If you can access apache error_logs, it will tell you exactly what is wrong.

What word?
Change it back and see if it works.

Setting everying to 777 may be easy but its a generally bad idea.

Directories should be set to 755
Scripts should be set to 755
Files (read only) should be set to 644

Files that you want to write to are the only grey area. If you know the uid of the process writing to the file set them to 644. If you do not know, or you have multiple uids writing to the same file set it to 777.

--

Also if you've got shell access, and the script is in perl, go into the directory where you uploaded the file and type 'perl -c mail.cgi'. That might tell you what's going wrong.

Odds are you just didn't upload the file in ascii mode.
