Not that I'm purporting to be an exprert on the subject, but got a couple of friends that has herpes.

Condoms HELP, but no guarantee. An open sore (and I guess even no NOTICEABLE sore) can infect you. So even though your cock was covered..the rest of you (down there) wasn't. So, it's the rubbing your unprotected parts against parts that were possibly infected that still can cause concern. As I understand it the sores can be very small (microscopic even) and look just like zits.
