Just got this email from a friend of the family that is stationed in Iraq. Interesting insight. I think this is about how I'm seeing things as well.

a. The Imbedded Reporter. The vast majority of these folks are on their first big assignment, and what's more - their first reports from a combat zone. Recall, Dan Rather cut his teeth on events in Vietnam... Needless to say, any bullet becomes a huge firefight and the Iraqi opposition grows in stature as it's story is embellished through the liberal press back home.

b. The pace of the war is right on track. Think of this one in terms of 60 days, and you've got it about right. In one week we've gone 250 miles, lost no armored vehicles (the track was knocked off of two M-1 Tanks) to enemy fire, and are slowly tightening the noose around Baghdad. There is no need to rush into the city while our airplanes can take out their vehicles at little or no risk. Once we've cut their numbers, and killed a bit more of the leadership, then we'll go in.

c. We have enough force deployed to theater. There are three other major units that have been on the books to go since I was in Kuwait a year ago. We had to make room by leaving the camps and opening the ports before we could bring them in. They are on the way, all as part of the war plan. The press is having zero impact on the plan in spite of what they might report.

d. We've taken just under 100 total casualties, just under 40 dead. The majority of these injuries we caused ourselves either through friendly fire or accidents. How many people die in Fresno, California when the fog rolls in? Imagine what it must have been like in the sandstorm. The Iraqi Army has been insignificant, unfortunately they won't be in the future. There could be days in the near future where we lose over 200 in a single day. City fighting is brutal no matter who the enemy is. Be prepared, and understand that freedom isn't free. Look how many our Nation lost from your generation.

e. Chemical or Biological Attacks may occur, but don't fear them. They will provide proof of what we've been saying all along. The soldiers and marines are prepared. Biological Weapons don't survive in extreme heat, and Chemical Weapons are largely ineffective under windy conditions. Better that it falls on those who've trained, than those who live in Chicago or Tampa.
