Here's the thing about all of this: It is absolutely trivial to prove that CO2 in the atmosphere causes warming. Countless experiments can prove this. It is uncontested that CO2 is a greenhouse gas - which means it creates a greenhouse effect.
Knowing that CO2 causes a greenhouse effect, deniers can only be left with these arguments: 1- The CO2 produced by humans is being removed from the atmosphere through some mechanism; or 2- The earth is naturally cooling, and the CO2 being produced is slowing that cooling, so even though it is causing warming, the warming isn't harmful. As to point #1, it is true that CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by natural balancing of the earth's systems; however, that removal (such as dissolution into the oceans) creates massive problems apart from warming. And those systems have been swamped to the point that they are no longer functioning to remove a sufficient amount of CO2 (you can google atmospheric increase in CO2 to find mountains of proof of this point). As to point #2, there is actual debate about whether the interglacial period of the current ice-age is coming to an end, and there is debate about whether the solar minimum will be a major minimum, which might result in some natural cooling for a brief period. Personally, I don't believe either of these to be true, but I can't say it's impossible. Nonetheless, whenever the cooling cycle (if there is one) ends, or if the warming is greater than the cooling, warming will end human life on earth. That's not acceptable, even if there were to be a short reprieve. Knowing that natural climate change is almost always (not always, but almost) measured in geological timeframes - not years but eons - the base case is that humans are impacting climate much more than nature is at the present time, and since the risk of inaction is extinction, why bet on the 1/1,000,000 chance that #2 is happening and doing so in rapid order? It's just denial and suicide. |

Well you know this didn't come from the US government because they aren't allowed to use that phrase anymore.

Any warming caused by human CO2 production is going to be a tiny fraction of warming caused by the Sun, less than 1%, insignificant.

Ummm, ya, there's absolute proof. In fact, you could do an experiment at home to prove it yourself...
Create two identical chambers, put additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere of one but not the other. Add a light-heating source (such as a light bulb) and insert a thermometer. Presto, proof that CO2 prevents heat from escaping the chamber. This is not rocket science, its 10th grade science..... |

Ya, the sun is the source of heat. CO2 traps that heat like a blanket traps your body heat. The blanket is not the source of ANY heat, but it prevents your body from radiating the heat out. That's what carbon dioxide does - it prevents light rays that originate at the sun, hit the earth and bounce back towards space, from getting into space. Instead the light rays strike the carbon dioxide molecule in the atmosphere and cause that molecule's energy level to rise. That rise in energy is what we call "heat." Thus, CO2 acts as a blanket. Its stops solar radiation from bouncing off the earth and making it into space. Instead that radiation stays in the atmosphere as heat. No one disputes this (other than flat earthers I guess). It's very very very basic science. The only dispute is whether the earth is currently cooling, and whether CO2 is absorbed by earth's natural mechanisms so that it doesn't cause large-scale warming. The science is not at all disputed. |

That CO2 is a greenhouse gas, yes there is absolute proof.
But there is no proof, and scant evidence, that any increase will cause a runaway greenhouse effect. This is the logical leap I'm talking about. The Earth is not a tiny closed chamber in a laboratory. |

Agreed, given your clarification, it is not trivial to prove that there would be a runaway greenhouse effect. It is only simple to prove that there is an effect.

The assumption that CO2 is a greenhouse gas has proven to be false, when one looks closer it becomes clear that the temperature always went up before the CO2, that is because increasing temperatures cause carbon levels to rise, that is where the confusion has come in.
If CO2 really was a greenhouse gas the world would already he in chaos now.

I believe NASA rather than a few morons on a porn site !!!
In its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.
The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million in the last 150 years. The panel also concluded there's a better than 95 percent probability that human-produced greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have caused much of the observed increase in Earth's temperatures over the past 50 years. Link to NASA for kids so you morons can understand, thats if you have the attention span to read a few paragraphs ? https://climatekids.nasa.gov/greenhouse-cards/ You think you know better than 1300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world, give me a fucking break!! |

Weigh the two sides
CO2 is a greenhouse gas CO2 is not damaging the earth. If the second opinion is wrong and you do nothing, you're all fucked. If the first opinion is right and you do a lot, you're not fucked. |
