Dual citizenship (US/Canada) question

Okay so if you marry someone with dual citizenship and they live in Canada but opt to move to the states, do you get fringe benifits?

Isnt that the crappy thing about being a US citizen, that they want their taxes from you wherever you are?

Yes, don't think so. You can choose which country you take residency in as far as I'm aware, and you pay taxes to that government, or a portion thereof depending how long you spend in which country. Exact amounts and details I'm sketchy on, trying to get info.

My understanding is/was that only minors can hold a dual citizenship where one of them is US. Once an adult, they need to decide to be US only or take citizenship elsewhere.

You won't be double taxed; there's a tax treaty between CA and USA.

Actually I do have that chance... When I turned 18, I went to the US consulate here in Montreal, got my US passport, you can hold both.... what I am sure is:

-You pay taxes in one place only... obvious but true... I am pretty sure it is the place where you live for most days in the year or perhaps it depends on revenue but you do the paperwork as American or Canadian..can't get the good sides on both

-And from what I understand, when I'll get married, the girl would automatically get both Canadian and American citizenships...

Only thing with the double citizenship is... US government does not "officially recognise it" which means, in USa you are American or not... if I enter USA and they ask me if I'm Canadian and say yes, it's an offence and I could lose my citizenship because when I cross the border I am "only American"

Hope this helps

okay, the only example I know for sure is this scenario.

Swiss citizen marries US citizen. US citizen now has dual citizenship. Swiss can get green card.

If they have kids, kids would have dual citizenship.
