There are alot of things that kids in America are not 'allowed' to do or say, and it has nothing to do with trying to squash their 'constitutional rights'... it has to do with their age and their ability to understand things as an adult normally would. We don't let kids vote, we don't let them live on their own, we don't let them join the armed forces, etc.

Also, like said before, Freedom Of Speech does not equal Freedom to say anything you want whenever and wherever you want. For example, you cannot yell 'Fire' in a crowded theater, or incite riots with 'speech'.

And invariably, we as adults, know what certain things said can lead to better than a child.... that's why we monitor it and 'censor' it. When they are old enough, then they are allowed all the same rights as adults.

I don't have a need to seek "negative attention". 90% of the time views expressed by me are my genuine views. Generally speaking I fail to appreciate your fast food, Hollywood happy ending, gun totin' culture. I know as an American you may find this shocking, but many hundreds of millions of people around the world feel the same way. I think your culture is excessivley shallow and materialistic. I also think the USA is an aggressive, bully nation. But by the same token, I have enjoyed the time i have spent in the USA and I am sure I will visit again. I am yet to see San Francisco or experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans for example.

I don't think Americans are an evil people. I think the vast majority of you are almost completely ignorant of the world that surrounds you because you're so deeply immersed in your own culture. Most Americans watch little to no international news and considering you are the richest nation on Earth you travel very little. Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians and even South Africans put you to shame in that department.

So no, you can't just put me in a little box labelled "son of alcoholic" and say that is why i hold the views I do. My opinions are well considered and strongly held. Sure I stir the shit some times. Yeah it also has little to do with the fact that we have states that are larger than most countries....to drive from Vegas back to Fort Worth to visit family takes over 24 hours.

In 24 hours I could drive through many countries in Europe.

Alot of people travel but keep it in the states, they experience cultures within the US culture.

You go from Texas to California and you're going to find totally different people.

Same from California to New York.

We have so much of our own land to see, I wish I had time to get to Europe.

I've seen almost the entire Wester part of the US...have driven from Washington State all the way down to Texas and visited every single state between here and there.

I've also lived in California, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and now Nevada.

I've visted some midwestern states, including Michigan which I was quite surprised at how beautiful it was.

Now I would like to visit more of the east coast and where some of America's history began...that'd be cool.

But damn man, we've got tons of things to learn about our own country...not to mention the fact that we have Canada up above and Mexico just below...so just because we don't all get to europe doesn't make us bad.

Our workplace culture differs from most other countries too. How many weeks on average does the normal aussie get for vacation from work?

I used to work for a German film company and we all got 4 weeks, because that's how most companies in Germany handled it...4 fucking weeks..that's an entire month in some cases.

Not too many people in the states get vacations PERIOD...let alone 4 fucking weeks.

If they are lucky they get 1 week, if they are blessed they get 2...and those MIGHT be paid.

170 odd countries in the world and you only want to travel within the confines of the one you were born in. Sorry, the world is a big fucking place and culturally the USA is a tiny, tiny part of the big picture. I don't buy it.

With essentially the same culture and values. The same food in the supermarket, the same music on the radio, the same cars on the roads and the same fast food restaurants.

No, it just makes you uninterested in the world around you.. or maybe you do really think seeing the world on TV is enough.

Four weeks paid, but I've never had a "full-time" job in my entire life. Oh, maybe once for 6 months. I work casually and manage to survive fine... and I travel overseas six weeks out of every year. And no, nobody supports me. I do it on my own terms.

Well I here Americans talking all the time about vacations... most just choose not to go overseas. Life is all about choices. Do you want that $50,000 car or do you want to travel? It's that simple. If you want to travel but have no vacations you save, quit your job and get another one when you get back. It's ALL choice.

Eroswebmaster is correct when he states that the average person only gets 1-2 weeks vacation per year. The USA has fifty states and each one has a slightly different culture, slightly different culinary delights, each one has different scenary (much of it is magnificent), each one has a different history and points of interest. Just to use the KISS method, with a 1 week vacation it would take 50 years to spend just a week in each state and a week in each state does not do the state justice. As was pointed out, Canada is to the north, Mexico to the south as well as all of South America. Traveling to Europe interests some. I have been to Europe and I prefer to travel in the United States (though my traveling days are pretty much over).

Passionate about our right to bear arms? Gun control is a major issue and controversy. Unfortunately the people who are for it have very well funded lobbyists who work very effectively. But progress is being made. It is a tough thing to tackle-sort of like putting toothpaste back in the tube but a majority of Americans would like to see tighter control on guns. And when you talk about fast food do you mean hamburger restaurants? Well, that's what we eat. In Mexico I see a lot of taco wagons. So fuckin' what? Do you not have restaurants in Australia that cater to cheap,fast, on-the-go eats or is it all fine dining?

Of course it is not as pronounced. Maybe you prefer visiting Egypt over Kansas, but if given the choice I would prefer to go back to Kansas even though I have been to Kansas. I have been to the Mid East and I do not like the Mid East. In fact of all of the countries that I have been to I prefer the United States and Canada.

As for fast food outlets. The average family has two working people holding down full time jobs and many have a full time job as well as a part time job. The average American has a busy day and fast food outlets are a convenience for the busy person. Yes, most Americans like their guns, and if you studied the history of America you would understand why Americans like their guns.

Yes, we have places in Australia where you can get fast food (besides McDonalds, Burger King, Subway etc) but they are generally independent operations (known as snack bars or fish and chip shops) and not massive nationwide chains... and we have nowhere near as many as you do.

I have been to Egypt, although not to sight see. I have also been to Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Kuwaite. I will repeat that I do not like the Mid East. I do not have any desire to go there again and would choose a trip back to Kansas over a trip to any part of the Mid East. If you prefer Egypt over Kansas, so be it.

Who cares what people eat? It's called culture, man. In Spain they like Paella and tapas. In England its Roast Beef and bangers and mash. In Germany they eat a shitload of sausage. You Americans like your greasy mass produced hamburgers and freedom fries. It's funny, the hardest cuisine to characterise is probably Australian because we are influenced by so many other cultures. We love fresh seafood and BBQ's. And meat pies. But you can find virtually anything here.

I don't where to look for fast food statistics. So no, I can't back that up. But we don't have Taco Bell, Fatburger, In and Out, White Castle, Wendy's, Blimpies etc etc. We have far fewer chains here.

This is actually a bit of an illusion I reckon. Most French people I know wouldn't go near a McDonalds even if they were forced at gunpoint.

Paris sees more tourists each year than any other city on the planet. I think its all the tourists gobbling up those Big Macs. French youth maybe but I don't think most French people eat a lot of McDonalds.

Why do people eat McDonalds? I don't know. Shit I ate it two days ago. Not because it tastes any good. Because it's fast and predictable. And sometimes you want that.

And regarding travel, it's not always about choice. My old man owned his own business for about the first 10 years of my life and we were able to take 1 family vacation that I can recall was when I was 6 years old and that was to Austin, Texas and San Antonio....of which both is very rich in Texas history.

The only other time our family travelled was for Holidays like Christmas, and then we went to the Panhandle of Texas to visit family and Kansas where my mother's family resided.

We didn't have another family vacation until I was 16 years old when my dad was given 2 weeks by his employer, almost 10 years between that vacation and the last.

Whether you realize it or not, that's the way it is for most families here in the states.

And cultures do vary greatly. Each state's culture is determined by it's indigenous populations as well as the many different people who have settled there.

In Texas alone the flags of Mexico, Spain, and France have flown. There are even large German communities that settled Texas in it's earliest days, and a lot of people don't even realize that's where that Mexican oompah music comes from, they call it Tejano music.

There's so much history in each state as theking stated to spend 1 week there does not do it justice...and yes there's even history in Kansas.

I'm sorry you feel the need to leave Australia to find happiness ;)
but that's not necessary here.
