Non-nude and super softcore does really well. It is easier to do however, and has better sales if you are doing it for a solo site.
The reason is "personality". If the model is super cute, and you do a great job of displaying her personality & quirks and other things that make her "real" in your sales pitches, tours and chat, customers tend to fall-hard for them.

Your second paragraph about model personality for a solo site is a billion percent true, but... finding these girls is like a needle in a haystack. That is the hard part.
I haven't launched a new solo girl in years... the reason is that I cannot find a girl worthy of solo. I find some good girls, but they don't have enough of the package to invest time into. other than a single shoot for multi-model site content.
That's why I have moved to multi-model mostly now.

What Kari Sweets did for years, it sells well, then eventually when you start to release more revealing slips/oops from the sets they sell very well as everyone has been denied it for so long.
