Being a people pleaser can get really annoying for the people you're trying to please. Some people want a "yes man", but not everyone does.

Personally I think it's better to have the balls to speak your mind, rather than nodding your head to keep people happy.

Takes all kinds of people to make up a world though

Her problem. Like you said, they don't have a great relationship and she was expecting you to see how bad her mom is and side with the friend. This would have reaffirmed to the friend that her mom was the bad person and at fault
