:mad I want to kill people now

So while I was sleeping tonight, I had my computer on. In the middle of the night, I woke up, smelling something funny.
I get up and see a small fire. Right next to my computer. ARGH!
So, I manage to put it out with a few bottles of coke. Computer badly damaged. Desk scorched. Wall scorched. Floor scorched.

It seems like one of my computer speakers caught fire for some reason. Damage really isn't that bad, except for one dead computer (the main one), some dead cd's and some important paperwork.

The bad part is not the damage - I can replace all of it, although I'll have to use an older pc for a while and get a new desk. However, everything I've worked on for the past month or so was on that computer. I had it backed up though - on the cd's next to the computer. The ones that are now molten/burned.

I seriously feel like killing someone now. Anyone.

Btw, my icq list is gone. Anyone that was on it (or that wants to be on it), please send me a message. Number is 85992840 (nickname is Anarchy Burger).

Now, excuse me while I go away and cry for a while.

I had a very productive month which is now gone.
I lost the alpha version of a tgp script. All development on a trading script that was near the testing phase. A shopping cart script that was nearly completed. A completed CMS script. Several 10+ page essays.
I feel like crying, really I do.

Yep, it happens. MY HD crashed a few months ago and I lost about a months work as well. Unfortunately, the molten CD incident is difficult to anticipate....

But like all sys admins know, keep the backups in an entirely different room/building/site if possible!

Still sucks...

You should be able to get your HD contents back. Fire doesn't wipe out magnetic charge.

Unfortunately, it does wipe out most of the plastic inside the computer.

I may be overly optimistic because of all the stories of Mac's surviving fires, with only the case melted.

However, if you are really desperate, you can get your data back. Hard Disk platters are metal. Unless the computer got *really* slagged, your data is still there, and data recovery firms can get it back.

Well, I'll give it a try, that's for sure
However, from the looks of the hd, chances seem small...

damn man, that is rough stuff... very sorry to hear. i will second the suggestion to go ahead and contact a data-recovery firm, i have seen HD's pulled out of burned computers give up data to the experts, the fire and heat does not necessarily damage the platters themselves as someone else stated. keep in mind though, that data-recovery isn't cheap, so it will depend on how much all that work is worth to *you*..! think $500 and up for platter recovery in a clean room..

I agree with Ian - data recovery firm. I spent $1200 recovering the AVSBlitz source code after my main drive died unexpectedly.. Backing up in a very paranoid fashion these days. ;>

But no one has asked the most important question -

What make and model were these speakers?

they can get your data back, unless the platters are melted. ever play with those things? you can chip concrete with a hdd platter.

you can get your data back, but it will cost. if it's that important, expect to drop a few grand on it.

sorry to hear it bro, that sucks.

Target is the brand, dunno the model - I've had them for 5 or 6 years or so. Cheap, crappy speakers that came with a computer I bought a long time ago.

seriously, if you outsoursce it and it's that important, don't spend $500 on it. most quotes i got were $2k or more (most likely). seriously, spend the $$ on the pros.

punkworld,
Send your hd to get recovered, get a new desk, new computer and count your blessings that you're alive. Imagine how productive you would have been if you'd have perished in the mini fire that could have killed you.
Now think of how productive you'll be knowing that you're alive and awoke on time with a few minor damages that could get fixed with a few bucks spent?

Good Luck!!

Punkworkd,

It's expancive, but I bet you will be able to get that data out. I've seen laptop hit the bottom of a lake, and they were able to get the data off, burn smashed, run over by a car. My old CEO left his on top of his car and it finaly fell off on I-70. THe place we sent it was able to recover 80% of the data (the thing was S M A S H E D)

www.savemyfiles.com go there and see.

That is so funny, you were totally on my icq list and at one point I wasn't sure who 'Anarchy Burger' was. This whole, handle/nickname identity thing confuses me sometimes.

And I'm sorry about the fire

That really sucks about data. Data recovery companies can almost definitely recover what's on the disk, although it such proceedures can cost quite a bit.

There is a potential downside to sending your disk in for recovery. Files that you had deleted may be recovered. For example if you've ever been caught in a cp circle jerk, one of those questionable images may be recovered. Such a find might land you in hot water, especially considering that you've got tgp scripts and other "distribution paraphanalia".

That might be a problem...
I got 3 cp sites submitted to one of my sites last month, and although I did report them to asacp, I don't really feel like a legal battle...

That sucks man. These guys are right about data recovery though. It will cost you, but as long as the heat didn't warp the platter you should be able to retrieve your data.

Well...sorry about that but think about it this way: you were lucky to wake up and stop the fire, imagine that you could have burned there, you and the entire house.
