So it seems like HP set the date to 13th of September in their firmware, when the printers should block non-HP cartridges. (Interesting part is, that they announced the acquisition of Samsung's printers division a day earlier)

Nothing new there. "Planned obsolescence" is a key function in most printers

This one is not at all about "Planned obsolescence". You can still buy a genuine HP cartridge and it would work fine. But it seems like they are losing a lot of cash because of those non genuine ones. Btw I've a 5 yo (or more) samsung laser printer and it works fine.

I disagree. Printers are dirt-cheap (less than $100 sometimes). The real money is in the cartridges. I could see HP blocking 3rd party cartridges from working to capture more of the market. But maybe they could have explored ways to manufacture OEM versions to sell to white-label companies and changed their firmware to accept other brands, capturing even more of the market. Who knows.

we needed to print some private docs.
our printer was out of ink, and new cartridge cost was same as new printer.
renting printer cost same as of new printer.
so we bought new printer
did our job and everyone lived happily ever after.
