    Venezuela is going through a major crisis. Basic food and household items are unavailable and there is hyperinflation over there which has resulted in a lot of problems. Anyone been out there recently?

    A friend of mine just came back from Caracas and apparently $20 buys over 6 months of food or 10 screws with the hottest Venezuelan escorts.

    Its unusually easy for foreigners to date Venezuelan chicks there - there's tens of 1000's on tinder. They're all hot, super slim and BEYOND desperate with their idea of a good date being simply "dinner".

    Sad state of affairs when you try to stop the free market but we should also tag this one, the result of money printing.

          No its true except that there are serious, serious limits to what you can actually buy so if you're limited to certain kinds of food, you can get a shit load for your money. I saw the photos myself but there's tons of videos on youtube about the ongoing crisis....

              In that case no foreigner can buy anything at that prices. Similar to east block in late 1980s but Latin American version must be much rougher. Wouldn't go there even everything's for free because revolution in 9, 8, 7...

                  No, things are dirt cheap for foreigners. It's the currency (the bolivar) that is being devalued against the US dollar through hyperinflation.

                          Not exactly true. Something like McDonalds will be basically in line with prices in other countries depending on where the goods are sourced, ie probably outside. Although, im only going on what my friend said but here's anecdotal evidence of cheap prices:

                              That said, there have been rightest demonstration marches in Caracas. A military coup seem a possibility ... Venezuela was not exactly a tourist destination before the crisis.

                                      Caracas must be one of the most dangerous cities, i just had a stopover there. Reading about it now, interesting. When there is more possitive news and not about killing tourist, i will go there. Diving must be great. But is it is so cheap, can't you buy land?

                                                          No I didnt miss that part at all, it is you who misunderstood.

                                                          The point is that if you buy food in McD, much of that food will be imported. Since the bolivar is devalued against the USD and by extension all other currencies, don't expect much of a difference in price for McD or Starbucks or any brand with its outside source produce which is priced outside Venezuela.

                                                          It may also be possible that you're GF did an official FX rather than buying her bolivars at the black market rate... there would be a massive difference between the two in terms of FX rate.

                                                          Recently you could buy a very nice meal in an upscale joint for around $1 if you get your bolivars at the black market rate and that's a fact. It may even have got cheaper since and there's 100's of blogs about how cheap Venezuela is right now....

                                                              Although, it looks like I'm wrong about that as it says McD is forced by the government to source much of their foodstuffs in Venezuela which may actually be a cause of the problem.

                                                              Bottom line is that you have to go there to really know a lot because there does seem to be a bit of media blackout. I dont know how accurate numbeo is and whether it considers the black market rate for bolivars but it does indicate relatively cheap prices here:

The free market works and you'll be helping the local population. Sooner or later the wages will rise to balance things out a bit more but in the mean time you benefit from the cheap labor whilst providing much needed support to the economy.

                                                                                      Had a chick stay with me last year and she's about to come back to the US to escape for a few month vacation again. Shit was bad last year when she was here but even worse now.
