Despite what UN and local idiots say, Iraq had it...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. forces near Baghdad found a weapons cache of around 20 medium-range missiles equipped with potent chemical weapons, the U.S. news station National Public Radio reported on Monday.

NPR, which attributed the report to a top official with the 1st Marine Division, said the rockets, BM-21 missiles, were equipped with sarin and mustard gas and were "ready to fire." It quoted the source as saying new U.S. intelligence data showed the chemicals were "not just trace elements."

It said the cache was discovered by Marines with the 101st Airborne Division, which was following up behind the Army after it seized Baghdad's international airport.

U.S. Central Command headquarters in Qatar had no immediate comment.

The United States and Britain launched the war against Iraq to rid the country of weapons of mass destruction. Iraq denies having such weapons.

They've also found 14 barrels of Sarin, Tabul, and Lewisite at another separate location, northeast of Karbala at a supposed "pesticide plant". Soldiers there have broken out in skin rashes and complained of nausea, and have been put through decontamination showers.

Tommy Franks was just on MSNBC saying they're investigating "several sites" right now, and as soon as they're done with the testing they'll make the reports available.

Suspected WMD site in Iraq turns out to contain pesticide

A facility near Baghdad that a US officer had said might finally be "smoking gun" evidence of Iraqi chemical weapons production turned out to contain pesticide, not sarin gas as feared.

A military intelligence officer for the US 101st Airborne Division's aviation brigade, Captain Adam Mastrianni, told AFP news agency that comprehensive tests determined the presence of the pesticide compounds.

Initial tests had reportedly detected traces of sarin - a powerful toxin that quickly affects the nervous system - after US soldiers guarding the facility near Hindiyah, 100 kilometres south of Baghdad, fell ill.

Captain Mastrianni said a "theatre-level chemical testing team" made up of biologists and chemists had finally disproved the preliminary field tests results and established that pesticide was the substance involved.

He said that sick soldiers, who had become nauseous, dizzy and developed skin blotches, had all recovered.

The turnaround was an embarrassment for the US forces in the region, which had been quick to say that they thought they had finally found the proof they have been actively looking for that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction.

A spokesman for the US army's 3rd Infantry Division, Major Ross Coffman, had told journalists at Baghdad's airport that the site "could be a smoking gun".

"We are talking about finding a site of possible weapons of mass destruction," he said.

The fact that the coalition forces have come up with no clear evidence of WMD after capturing much of Iraq in 19 days of fighting has raised questions over the war's justification.

hey, stop harrasing me French friends!

They built the nuclear reactor for Iraqies which Israelies bombed
(French admited it had nuclear production capabilities but only RECENTLY,
thus making the Israeli action unnesesarry, because back in the day they couldn't know that....without OFFICIAL French admittance)

My heart bleeds for French, Russian and German peoiple who'll never see a dime from the loans they made to Peaceful Iraq...

let's organise webmasters to start making collections for our poor former allies...

I'll personally donate $10 to restore the nuclear reactor in Iraq...

We can't be talking about the same report here. Who loads pesticides into missiles that are ready to fire? The retraction doesn't apply to the bigger claim of chemical weapons, so we still have a smoking gun.

Like I said before, nothing will satisfy the US-haters. Now, that we've found MPDs, the excuses will simply spin off into new directions. It's sad and comical at the same time. Don't ever underestimate the power of an inferiority complex.

This thread is hilarious.

Anti-war people were never saying, "Saddam is telling the truth. He has no WMD".

When did a single anti-war person EVER say that? When? When? Everyone knew that Iraq was bound to have something lying around since U.S. companies have been selling weapons grade material to Iraq for decades.

What most people around the world were saying is that if the world is so concerned about Saddam's weapons ,that may or may not be in violation of UN resolutions, then the UN and NOT the U.S. should follow through with inspections - a non violent method that WAS WORKING. When they found those Al-Samoud missiles, the Iraqi's started destroying them under UN observation. If the U.N. found a few warheads stuffed with pesticides, they would have destroyed those too.

Instead, the US went to war to grab oil and spread its hegenomy. THAT is what people around the world have been protesting about. A major side point to all these protests is to underscore American hypocracy. The US is the leading manufacturer of WMD, including some pretty nasty biological agents. The US has used these weapons en massse and on non-combatants to boot - we doused Cambodia with Sarin and practically defoliated Vietnam with Agent Orange. Millions of innocent villagers were decimated.

We are the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons ON CIVILIAN TARGETS. Say what you want about Hiroshima but Nagasaki can never be justified by any logic whatsoever.

We have been bombing someone somewhere in the world every year for the last 60 years. The USA has waged perpetual war every year for the last 60 years!!! Has Canada done this? Has France? Have other industrialized nations? During that time we have armed and directly supported the most brutal dictators of the 20th century: The Shah of Iran, Marcos, Noriega, Duvalier, Saddam, Pinochet...the list is endless.

We go to war and defy the UN in order to make another country "obey UN resolutions". Meanwhile, we support Israel which has violated three times as many UN resolutions as Iraq. The hypocracy is endless. Absolutely endless!

Sad but true: It is the U.S. that has become the greatest threat to world peace.

And this is not coming from a "US hater". It is coming from a patriotic American who wants to see his country restore its values to those it was founded on!!!

Nevaaahhh!!!!!
Canada doesn't have nuclear weapons..c'mon, they don't even have right color uniforms!!!

and France helped Iraq building nuclear plant capable of producing the enriched uranium ONLY to help them protect themselves from North Korea!!!!

I love France, I love Canada,
down with Yankees bloody regime,
mark my word, by the year 3001 even historians won't know what USA was....while French Canadies peace loving people will inherit the Earth.

Everyone knew that Iraq was bound to have something lying around since U.S. companies have been selling weapons grade material to Iraq for decades.
Misinformation/bullshit. The US government nor US companies have never sold "weapons grade material" to Iraq.

The US has used these weapons en massse and on non-combatants to boot - we doused Cambodia with Sarin and practically defoliated Vietnam with Agent Orange. Millions of innocent villagers were decimated.
Misinformation/bullshit. The US did not use Sarin in Vietnam.

We are the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons ON CIVILIAN TARGETS. Say what you want about Hiroshima but Nagasaki can never be justified by any logic whatsoever.
There were multiple logical reasons for nukes being used against Japan.

Has France engaged its military multiple times in the past sixty years? Yes. Has other industrialized nations engaged their military in the past sixty years? Yes.

We go to war and defy the UN in order to make another country "obey UN resolutions". Meanwhile, we support Israel which has violated three times as many UN resolutions as Iraq. The hypocracy is endless. Absolutely endless!
Hypocracy is alive and well and the US is not the only nation that practices hypocracy. Hmm...how many nations are there on this planet?

Sad but true: It is the U.S. that has become the greatest threat to world peace.

Rumsfeld 'offered help to Saddam'

Declassified papers leave the White House hawk exposed over his role during the Iran-Iraq war

Julian Borger in Washington
Tuesday December 31, 2002
The Guardian

The Reagan administration and its special Middle East envoy, Donald Rumsfeld, did little to stop Iraq developing weapons of mass destruction in the 1980s, even though they knew Saddam Hussein was using chemical weapons "almost daily" against Iran, it was reported yesterday.

US support for Baghdad during the Iran-Iraq war as a bulwark against Shi'ite militancy has been well known for some time, but using declassified government documents, the Washington Post provided new details yesterday about Mr Rumsfeld's role, and about the extent of the Reagan administration's knowledge of the use of chemical weapons.

The details will embarrass Mr Rumsfeld, who as defence secretary in the Bush administration is one of the leading hawks on Iraq, frequently denouncing it for its past use of such weapons.

The US provided less conventional military equipment than British or German companies but it did allow the export of biological agents, including anthrax; vital ingredients for chemical weapons; and cluster bombs sold by a CIA front organisation in Chile, the report says.

Intelligence on Iranian troop movements was provided, despite detailed knowledge of Iraq's use of nerve gas.

Rick Francona, an ex-army intelligence lieutenant-colonel who served in the US embassy in Baghdad in 1987 and 1988, told the Guardian: "We believed the Iraqis were using mustard gas all through the war, but that was not as sinister as nerve gas.

"They started using tabun [a nerve gas] as early as '83 or '84, but in a very limited way. They were probably figuring out how to use it. And in '88, they developed sarin."

On November 1 1983, the secretary of state, George Shultz, was passed intelligence reports of "almost daily use of CW [chemical weapons]" by Iraq.

However, 25 days later, Ronald Reagan signed a secret order instructing the administration to do "whatever was necessary and legal" to prevent Iraq losing the war.

In December Mr Rumsfeld, hired by President Reagan to serve as a Middle East troubleshooter, met Saddam Hussein in Baghdad and passed on the US willingness to help his regime and restore full diplomatic relations.

Mr Rumsfeld has said that he "cautioned" the Iraqi leader against using banned weapons. But there was no mention of such a warning in state department notes of the meeting.

Howard Teicher, an Iraq specialist in the Reagan White House, testified in a 1995 affidavit that the then CIA director, William Casey, used a Chilean firm, Cardoen, to send cluster bombs to use against Iran's "human wave" attacks.

A 1994 congressional inquiry also found that dozens of biological agents, including various strains of anthrax, had been shipped to Iraq by US companies, under licence from the commerce department.

Furthermore, in 1988, the Dow Chemical company sold $1.5m-worth (£930,000) of pesticides to Iraq despite suspicions they would be used for chemical warfare.

The only occasion that Iraq's use of banned weapons seems to have worried the Reagan administration came in 1988, after Lt Col Francona toured the battlefield on the al-Faw peninsula in southern Iraq and reported signs of sarin gas.

"When I was walking around I saw atropine injectors lying around. We saw decontamination fluid on vehicles, there were no insects," said Mr Francona, who has written a book on shifting US policy to Iraq titled Ally to Adversary. "There was a very quick response from Washington saying, 'Let's stop our cooperation' but it didn't last long - just weeks."

I have read virtually every article, including articles from unrealiable sources, about what and what was not supplied by the US government and/or US companies. The US never sold "weapons grade" materials to Iraq.

Old fucking news...and quote me the part that says the US government or American companies sold "weapons grade" material to Iraq.

Really? Well then I suggest you read those articles again.

Anthrax spores are not "weapons grade material"? I guess they were going to use the anthrax as an industrial lubricant or something?

It is one thing to be opinionated. It is another thing entirely to live in Denial despite a mountain of incriminating evidence.

No they are not. The spores require sophisticated techonology/ refinement to be made into "weapons grade" material.
