Business Verisign pays $130 Million for new gTLD .web?

Someone (cough, cough VeriSign) just gave ICANN $135m for the rights to .web {} The Register

Industry speculation is that the owner of the dot-com registry, Verisign, is secretly behind Nu Dot Co and plans to purchase .web in order to remove what could be a serious competitor to its dot-com crown.

Earlier this week, in paperwork submitted to US financial watchdogs, VeriSign declared it will "pay approximately $130.0 million for the future assignment of contractual rights, which are subject to third-party consent. The payment is expected to occur during the third quarter of 2016."

That suggests VeriSign coughed up $130m for .web, and Nu Dot Co added $5m to retain a stake.

Another slated possibility is that publicly listed company Neustar – which previously bought the .co top-level registry from the Nu Dot Co executive team – is behind the company.

Whoever bought .web will be listed on this ICANN page, when the DNS overseer gets round to updating it.

.web is not bad...but they will probably put high registration fees for premium words and terms and investors will take the rest before any real adoption by end users...

I read somewhere that .web was the original idea instead of .com but it sounded weird because of the www.domain.web...so they went for .com and .net...

Does it have unicode support?

We want to implement IDNA {Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications (IDNA)} but it will be in a year or two. Implementing a robust Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) is our immediate priority as we will be in the open registration phase around the beginning of 2017.

Right now I am engrossed with TMCH (Trademark Clearing House) domain name exclusion and scrubbing having just completed algorithmic planning for premium name pricing.

I parsed out 130K of these ;)
as one component of a premium domain pricing algo.
