you should use a combination of hardware and software firewalls. today's "firewalls" you buy at best buy, like the linksys, dlink, and _most_ netgear (besides the prosafe vpn models) use NAT as their firewall. not very firewally, but it generally deters amateurs. it's been well proven they can get through. the prosafe uses stateful packet inspection. really want security on an affordable basis? get a sonicwall.
i use sygate for the software end, also have been impressed with symantec and mcafee. i'd probably stick with symantec and sygate. and if you can afford it, the symantec hardware firewall ;P

i use the software you can find at agnitum.com iv done a lot of screwing with windows networking, seems to be the best software end. if you build a firewall and all that shit hardwarewise, your wasting your time, youll spend half your time getting it all set up, and the other half applying patchs, there is ALWAYS a way through. less things to exploit.

Now, there's a Saturday morning computer talk show on the radio here, and they were pretty much laughing at the idea of having both a router AND a software firewall like ZoneAlarm. Could they be stupid?

I hate firewalls. And I hate IWF, idiots with firewalls. Most of the firewalls out there are configured too strict and we get complaints at work from time to time from IWF with a NON issue.

I use a Netgear FVS318 firewall/router as well as running BlackIce Defender(software). For a long time I used only the software firewall, but I wanted to hook up multiple machines to my DSL so the hardware router was the way to go. SInce hooking the router up, I still run the BlackIce software, but it rarely alarms anymore. The firewall/router is doing its job.
I tried ZoneAlarm, but it seemed to slow my machine down. |
