    Big Houses and No Jobs?

    In the US.
Big Houses and No Jobs? Was talking with some family and they live in upscale neighborhoods. They said they are noticing more people in their neighborhood with no jobs.

I know one of my Bro's neighbors is retired military. He is pretty young.

I am guessing some are retired gov workers and some may be disability. Any other ideas?

yes it could be that the people living in those homes are retired gov. workers, but the economy isn't doping so well for a lot of people. Including my father. People are battling financial. However 2016 was predicted to be a very poor year for the global economy.

Most people with jobs can't afford big houses.

Just like before the crash people bought houses they couldn't afford and the banks financed them with no questions asked, then the tax payers had to bail out the banks.

Something all over again. It never stopped and the banks are bigger and doing it all over again so they can get their free tax payer funded bail outs..

Meanwhile neither of the nominees will do anything about it and the republican controlled congress wants even less regulations..

He probably does occasional consulting for the government, and has full retirement. Ex-military here get it after 30 years service.

Back during the housing bubble there were companies giving out mortgages and they said outright having a job or a source of income was not a requirement to qualify for the mortgage.

I don't know that this is the case where you live, but there were plenty of people buying houses and getting it set up so they had several months with no payments then they would take out a second mortgage and use that money to make the payments on the house.

                      2 Possible explainations

1- Homeowners had good jobs, nice house, cars. Then lost their job(s). Too broke to move as the house, cars and everything else have no equity.

2- You can start in a starter home, couple of years, build up equity. Every few years trade up to a nicer home in a better neighborhood. Do that for 30+ years, you end up with a big place. Parents made the mistake of not doing that. Didn't want a house debt.

If the parents like not having a big yard to care for, no large heating bills and less taxes then they did good.

Smaller house and bigger vacations sounds like a good deal.

How do you know they don't have a job and how do you know anything about their financial position?

I've had friends and neighbors who think I don't work because I am always at home. My neighbor also works from home - he runs a military t-shirt online store and also a store for people with beards - and he is always home. The neighbor across the street is unemployed, but they have so many people living them it's hard to tell what is going on. The neighbor on the other side is an Uber driver.

It's happening quite a lot in Vancouver. But I suspect it has different reasons...

I live in a big house on my street and my neighbors always see me home doing nothing, they asked once what I do for a living and I said I dabble in just about everything online.
