White House Pursuing Arctic Drilling
"(AP) Rebuffed by the Senate, the Bush administration will not give up the fight this year to open an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling, Interior Secretary Gale Norton said Saturday.
The White House is turning its attention to the House in hopes of salvaging a key part of the president's energy strategy. Republicans fell two votes shy in the Senate of passing the legislation that could lead to removal of a 43-year-old ban on developing millions of barrels of oil from the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/...in544664.shtml

Miss Eve,
A gal from Alaska I don't support them going into a national park / refuge even if it is only a few thousand or whatever acres. What did the experts say, at full drilling or something, it will only be 6 months or 1 year of oil??

Im not an expert but from what I understand the experts on both sides completely disagree. I think they should at least allow that underground sideways drilling they can do tests and figure out if its worth arguing about.
National Park makes it sound so.......ummmm, parky? lol, its definitely not the same as imagining drilling in Yosemite or something. Theres definitely wildlife but the area they want to drill in is TEEEEEENY and its a fucking barren ice land! |

Random side note: You might know this already but there is a fund called the Alaska Permanent Fund that was set up to use state funds from oil proceeds and invest them and pay out dividends to AK residents. The last few years the dividend has been around 1700 bucks. The funds are direct deposited or mailed out the first week in October. Anyway, I read an article today about how creditors camped on the steps of the courthouse to be the first in line to get garnishments on dividends this year, hahahahaha

It's funny, all you fuckers whine about gas prices and when they try to aid gas prices you complain even more. Why don't you all just shut the fuck up.

You either preserve wildlife reserves or you say "Fuck it who cares"
One way you have places of beauty left, the other you have a tank full of gas at $1 a gallon. Or did you think preserving things of beauty were for free? |

charly, thats what a lot of people say about ANWR. The reality is that its north of the arctic circle. Its not really beautiful. I have never known anyone to go to ANWR for fun. This is not a place that is a tourist location. Hardcore visitors can charter a bush plane and get dropped off.
Caribou herds etc migrate right under the current oil pipeline. The whole thing is 19 million acres and they want to drill in 5% of that on the northern coast. |

By Mark Sherman The Associated Press WASHINGTON -- Seven Enron Corp. subsidiaries and five other energy companies manipulated natural gas and electricity prices and supplies in California, federal energy regulators ruled Wednesday. As a result of the manipulation, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Chairman Pat Wood said California would receive more than the $1.8 billion in refunds recommended by a FERC judge in December. The exact amount is to be determined in the coming months, but FERC spokesman Kevin Cadden estimated that the total would be $3.3 billion. California is seeking $9 billion. http://www.sltrib.com/2003/Mar/03272...ness/42144.asp |

California was screwed not only by Enron, but by Bush and the federal government, who refused to step in (as they are supposed to do when a company is breaking federal law) because he didn't want to piss off Enron, his biggest campaign supporter. Once Democrats attacked Bush on Enron and made it a huge issue, then Bush had no other choice but to back down and let federal regulators try to undo the political damage that was being done. I posted facts, you posted something about Bill Clinton and golf. Why not mention his blowjob, just to prove that you are brainwashed beyond repair? If you don't want examples that prove you wrong, then don't ask for them. Here's another, continue to spin: Cheney's ex-firm Haliburton gets Iraq deal 1:22pm Wed Mar 12th, 2003 LONDON -- Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), a division of the Houston-based oil services company Halliburton, has won a Pentagon contract to assess and rehabilitate possible damage to Iraq's oil infrastructure, in case Saddam Hussein sets his oilfields ablaze following a US military strike. The company was also contracted to oversee firefighting operations in Iraq's oilfields. The KBR contract adds force to the arguments of those who believe oil is Washington's primary motive for war, considering George W Bush's Vice President Dick Cheney served as Halliburton's chief executive officer (CEO) from 1995 until the 2000 Presidential election. http://www.malaysiakini.com/foreignn...1046662909.php For every Bush fact you try to spin away, I can post five more facts. Whey don't you admit that you lost this one and move on? |

but the area they want to drill in is TEEEEEENY
Uh Huh,,, teeeeenny piece of land hee and one over there and wayyyy over there... Do a search on http://www.pbs.org concerning this issue. It's estimated to take <center>**10**</center> years to even get that field into full production... anyone that thinks will see the distance involved, think the big oil will let the price go DOWN?! A good portion of you aren't old enough or weren't even thought of when the first Alaskan pipeline was built... all the damage that was done... Or do you think they open a box marked 'Acme Oil Pipeline Kit" and it just unfolds? Sure caribou are passing under the pipe NOW, but there were alot more PRE pipeline than now. Test drilling! With the technology they possess, that is a thing of the past and is nothing but subterfuge to get in and started and then BS their way... "Well we're here, might as well grab off a couple million barrels to test eh wot?" This falls right in with the Brazilian kid wondering if the US will attack them... What for? Give it 10 years at their rate of deforestation and they won't HAVE any water OR trees to want to bother with. I just hope the next president does exactly what Bush did to Clintons plans that were in place and working pretty well towards a good ending on key subjects that need dealt with... KILL all of Bushs plans in progress. Course, if you check his game card, the man hasn't finished a d*mned thing worth bothering with. It will fall to someone else to sort out his messes.

The central Arctic caribou herd is at its largest point since scientists began tracking it 23 years ago, a state survey finds. Alaska biologists estimate the herd has swelled to 27,000, up 35 percent from the last survey, in 1997. Overall, the herd continues expanding since biologists began population assessments in the early 1970s, when oil companies began development of Prudhoe Bay. Building a pipeline across a huge state and drilling in a small portion of land are two very different things. There are so many regulations that have to be followed now that have been instituted since the oil boom in the 70's. Im not really pro drilling and I do get tired of the propoganda on both sides. Pro oil act as if there is an unlimited supply under those lands and the environmentalists act as if someone wants to drill in the middle of Yosemite. Btw, many people on both sides of my family worked on the pipeline. What a crazy time. I think maybe it caused my parents divorce, lol ;) |

Gee it only makes perfect fucking sense.
Being against it is like saying "no i don't want to dig up that gold. There's only enough to live off of for a few years and it will hurt the dirt." How fucking retarded. |

The herds are larger NOW, but in the mid 70's when they were dealing with the pipeline being built... ;-) The 23 yrs puts that date to 1980 If I remember all those years back to when I was in High School and right after school, when they were working on the pipe... I d.
I don't know numbers but some animal shows have mentioned the large herd decreases as well as lowering of many other non-herding breeds, during and after the pipe was built. Why bother if so little oil is there? Why not save it as a bank account... Rules and regulations are Bush's fav things to do away with, ignore or act like he doesn't understand (prob because he doesn't) So they would be done away with as fast as they sprang up. Know what you mean on the divorces. Alot of men left central Ohio to work on the pipe, unemployment was high here then, and many families ended up split. Let alone the fact that the men couldn't send much of the huge salaries they got, simply due to the extreme costs of things they needed or wanted that the oil companies didn't provide. The whole point being is to get away from the Middle East where we only procure a small percentage of OUR oil from? Brazil will be pumping more sooner than Alaska could, Venezuela will get their strike problems over sooner... we could be using that 10 yrs on waiting on Alaska to come thru for a big year's worth of oil (as per their estimations), to come up with alternatives. Sad to say having grown up in the day of Muscle cars, they won't be making a large scale occurrance. We will be driving electric cars that look like scooters while trucks and things will run on carbon based fuels. Until they come up with ways to make the trucks and things run of different fuels as well. Btw, there are HUGE quantities of gold, say 5 miles down... do we waste a state in order to make the hole large enough to go dig it up? (In response to the gold statement)

If you are pro-ANWR drilling, answer the following questions:
1. Assuming we decide to drill ANWR, how long will it take to actually start getting oil? 2. By what percentage will the ANWR oil reduce our dependence on sucking the foreign oil cock? 3. How much will cost the taxpayers to reduce our dependence by that percentage? 4. How many unused permits for offshore oil development do the 3 biggest oil companies currently hold? Now you know why anyone with 3 brain cells to rub together is against ANWR drilling. |
