My best day ever

Friday I bought a boat. Not having anything to pull it with yet I decided to rent a truck for a couple days so I could take my kids to the lake. Saturday morning I get to the Uhaul to find the truck I have reserved has a flat tire. After waiting for a new tire, we get to the boat dealership to find out the boat trailer has a flat tire. Since I bought a used boat I had to pay for the tire. After the tire is fixed we swing by my home to load the boat up with our junk, where I promptly back up over the cable TV box in my front yard beside the driveway. After searching for a boat ramp at a local lake, I actually back the trailer up and put the boat into the water with no problems. I am so proud of myself now. After a couple of hours of pulling my kids on the float thingys, we decide to stop and eat and swim around the boat. I drop anchor but forgot to tie the anchor to the line good. Bye bye anchor. Undeterred by my run of bad luck, we continue on the lake for a few more hours until the lake starts getting choppy. Again I back the trailer down the boat ramp perfectly. During the test drive before I bought the boat, the salesman drove the boat all the way onto the trailer so I figured I could do the same. Wrong answer. I went slightly to the left and too far up on the trailer. Trying to reverse I hear scary sounds coming from the outboard. After close examinatation I discover that the one of the trailer runners is wrapped around the prop. Bad thing is the runner was also still attatched to the trailer, so all the weight of the boat was on the front of the boat and the outboard. I could not back the trailer up anymore as the muffler of the truck was already submerged. Thinking if I unhooked the trailer it would only slide back a couple feet, and thus relieve the tension on the outboard, I unhooked the trailer and watched open mouthed as my new boat and trailer rolled into the lake and floated away. So here I am blocking the ramp, 12 boats waiting to dock, and my boat is drifting away with the trailer still attatched. After the boat/trailer drifted about 100 yards out, some people towed it back in to me. At this time there was about 20 boats watiing to pull in, and they were not the friendliest group around. After about a hour of backing up and forth we finally got the outboard unjammed and got the boat back on the trailer. Lucky for me only the prop is trash. Did I forget to mention that I forgot to put sunscreen on? Yep I look like a lobster right now and am in some serious pain. SO now I sit here in front of my computer dehydrated, in pain, and without cable TV. At least the cable modem still works. Now my kids want me to get a camper. LOL

Lots of bad luck, but the important thing is your kids having fun on the boat.
Did they enjoy the day?

At least someone remembered to put the drain plug in. My parents have a place on the lake and my uncle brought he brand spankin new boat out for a week. They went to put it in and he forgot to put in the drain plug, and within minutes...the back end of the boat was submerged. He forgot the suntan lotion too...maybe that has something to do with it.

Nah I will keep it and buy a camper to pull it with. I just want try to drive it up the trailer anymore, LOL. Today is just as bad, since we don't have cable TV, I have to listen to 2 ten your old girls and their friends. Without TV all they do is fight and argue with each other.

LOL

Look at it this way ...at leaste you remember to put the plug in it , my first boat i about sank forgetting to put the plug in it ...took it out on the columbia .....got about 6 miles down river the thing started to fill up with water .

I sold my boat, but when I still had it I went down to launch it and the guy in front of me launched a beautiful power boat, then went to park his truck and trailer. I was bullshitting with a friend and was not paying attention to the guys boat but heard him loudly cussing when he returned. He too forgot to put the plugs in and it was already about half submerged.

HaHA great story...

I have seen that happen to alot of people far as losing there boat and trailer. I grew up on the water next to a public boat launch. Just glad it never happened to me...

Sounds like you and the kids still had a good time on the lake thats all that matters.

The boat I had is gone as of last October (was actually gone for me about 3 years ago after my divorce).

Anywhooo...

Back in 1998, my ex (not ex then of course) decided he wanted a boat. Not just any boat.. not a boat that had to be trailered around. We finally settled on a new 36' Carver at about $150K. The dealer is on Lake Union in Seattle. Lake Union is between Puget Sound and Lake Washington (big difference in the waters from on to the other). Well I wasn't about to trust my ex to back that thing in and me hop off and tie up, so it made sense that I be the first one to learn to manueuver this thing that cost as much as alot of people's homes. If anyone's ever dealt with a twin engine boat, you know that at low speed you can't use the wheel, you have to manuever using the engines in variations of forward, neutral and reverse.

Well, the dealer gave us a few lessons, then decided it was the day to take possession. They helped us out through the Ballard Locks into the Sound, then set us free telling use we had plenty of time before dark to get down to Tacoma where our moorage was.

Soon it starts raining... then it gets foggy, then it starts getting dark. If we hadn't had them install a GPS, I would of been aground somewhere. Between me staring at the GPS and my ex and my brother on the bow, we finally were in the home stretch.

I come around the final lighthouse that marks the opening to Commencement Bay in Tacoma. I'm thinking kewl....follow the shoreline and we'll come to the marina. WRONG!!! I'm cruising at about 18 knots and then I see this dark looming thing coming up fast. I slam the engines into neutral and then into reverse almost throwing my ex and my brother off the bow. Throttling in my own wake, my eyes focus on two huge barges sitting in front of us...no lights..nothing on them. We were less than 20 feet from them.

When I recovered we slowly made our way to the marina where the tide was moving the currents in the weirdest way possible. If it wasn't for a nice live-onboard who heard us, we would of never docked that night.

Needless to say it was a trial by fire. I got to where I could dock that thing on a dime, but I never forgot that I was moving around in something that cost what someone's house does.

What the fuck were you thinking???? Shit I thought I had boat problems but that takes the cake. You really thought you could unhook your boat on the ramp and it wouldn't just roll down the ramp and float away??

Sorry about your luck man, guess you had to learn that the hard way!! Do yourself a favor and stay outta the ocean till you learn your boat. A lot worse things can happen out there. Take a boating course for sure

PS there are no friendly groups on a public boat ramps!

When I was a kid my dad ran aground and sucked sand into the cooling intakes on the outboard.... Completely burned up the motor.

He had to get towed into a local marina, hitch hike back to the marina we left from, drive back and get the now DEAD boat out of the water.

Ahhh boats.

A hole in the water you throw money into. But I want one so bad.

Update 3/29

Today I bought a 33 foot Winnebego. It does have a propane stove so stay tuned for more mis-adventures. This summer I will attempt to take the kids cross country. Wally World???

Ouch!! Damn, I feel your pain with story Choker. I can remember the first boat I bought. I had just got it, and had it stocked with Wine, Food, and other goodies. I was waiting for my girlfriend at the time to get home from work so I could surprise her. Well she came home, and we launched the boat and set out for a romantic evening. Needless to say, a little while later, I noticed water coming up into the boat! I forgot to put the fucking plug in and well all the food, and blankets and stuff got soaked. I had to jump in the ocean, and put the plug in, and then we both spent the next hour and half bailing the boat out by hand, the bilge pump wouldn't work. Well the evening was ruined, and even worse... no action for me! Damn.
