Is bandwidth / transfer allocation pretty limited on dedi servers these days?

If I wanted a server with at least 50 meg upload speed would I have to pay a fortune? Is using a lot of transfer a big deal, these days?

Looks like the cable company is going to limit me to 2TB monthly ... I don't think they enforce it in most cases, but the upload is only 20 megs
Well they say it is turbo boosted . . just kind of means burstable I think

I have servers that cost around $90 a month with 500Mbps connections to the net, 1Gbps between local servers and unlimited bandwidth usage.

If you go with a real hosting company then these deals are common.

However you need to be able to self manage your server.

Shared hosting is unlimited only in theory. ;)

Fact : You've been on dedicated hosting for 16 years because you believed that.

What exactly does it mean to manage the server? I've never used a server before, I mean I've used my machines from all over the country via tight-vnc and all of that, I always was curious about that - what all does that mean if it's unmanaged?

Also, do I have to have a windoze license with most servers these days?

I'm not going to use it for webhosting, I want to download massive amounts of content and upload it
Shouldn't need a lot of server resources except BW (not converting the video or anything)

Years ago I had shared hosting at godaddy - paying $4 to $11 monthly - and many times I used 500gb transfer in a month, a couple of times I used 2-3TB , and the sites always seemed to load fine and I STILL am not quite sure of how I got away with that . . for a couple of years, at least , and the sites were still up until I forgot all about them completely .
They were crazy. They gave me unlimited storage and I could host as many domains as I wanted and all of that shit . Only thing is, I think the servers I was on were not good for SEO at all , but I think they would sell you better IPs if you wanted

From what I've always known, it's VERY unusual for that to be okay on shared plans
I'm still not sure what caused them to not hate me for all of that time
I had 100-200 doms with them as well, but that doesn't exactly make me some profitable important customer

Perhaps they make so much on average in upsells and all of THAT, the avg. customer was worth it to not fuck with them over something like that, I guess

The only time they ever complained was when I tried to use their FTP to back up my whole personal hard drive and it was a few hundred gigs and they did NOT like that AT ALL
