Saw Purple Rain in the threatre tonight, and -

    It was GREAT!

The Cineplex Odeon chain of movie theatres decided to show Prince's Purple Rain in honour of his death tonight in all of their theatres across Canada. My better half and I decided to go.

It was so cool. First, the threatre was completely sold out. Everyone seemed really anxious. A woman sitting in front of me said she was "ready to cry". A guy came out saying they were starting the movie late because they didn't expect a full house and there were still people in the queue.

When the movie started, the sound volume was cranked up to 10. The audience cheered, clapped, laughed, chair-danced during the entire movie. Morris Day brought lots of laughs with every line he spoke, and Jerome brought howls of laughter when he tossed that girl into the garbage bin. Apollonia was fucking gorgeous in every scene, and the bad acting by the supporting cast was, well, fun.

Prince of course was un fucking real. I hadn't seen the movie in a long time but it was easy to see why he was such a big star after watching this movie. He really owned the stage, and man he could really play. And sing. And dance. And write. And... act!

As the movie was ending I was thinking wow - everyone in the threatre is just really enjoying themselves and celebrating Prince's music and life. No one is going to cry, are they?

Yep. During the song Purple Rain, the camera catches guitar player Wendy crying and Prince gives her a kiss on the cheek. At that moment, my better half bursts into tears. Awww...

Anyway. Sure we have all seen the movie but if you get a chance to see it on the big screen, go check it out. It looks great thanks to all digital restoration, and it sounds even better.

As far as I can remember it was actually one of the longest playing movie ever in Cinema. Can't really find a mention of it but it was played for about as long as these.

        E.T. 12 months.
        Star Wars 44 weeks.

People like this should be banned from the theatre for life.

Saw it in the theater in 1984, honestly The story was weak, the acting was bad, (no Prince could not act). On the upside, Morris and Jerome were funny as fuck, Apollonia was hot, and the music was AMAZING.

Last time I saw it (couple years ago) it was even a worse story and acting than I remembered.

Prince was a legendary musician, but just because he died, a bad movie he did doesn't suddenly become good.

It WAS however an amazing aphrodisiac for my 19 year old GF at the time

In 1984 I was listening to 80s hair bands like Ratt, Cinderella, and Quiet Riot (to name a few), but Purple Rain gave me an appreciation for his music. I only saw him once in concert. Sometime in the early 90s here in Montreal and it was a great show.

I read that they are turning his home / recording studio into a museum, and that his Bike will be there. Pretty cool.

In its 40 year history, it had never once rained on the Super Bowl. That is until Price sang Purple Rain at the half time show. The show organizers were really worried about the rain and called Prince to tell him about the weather. His response: "Can you make it rain harder?"

I'm fortunate to have seen him live five times. Including his Club 3121 in Las Vegas and at his landmark show at Coachella. It was never the same show and it was always mind-blowing. I see a LOT of shows, and Prince ruled as a live entertainer. His talents were enormous.

I had the chance to see Prince in Vegas 5 or 6 years ago I think in Las Vegas, and didn't go. What a dink. I'm sure I missed something really good.

Club 3121 was the first time I saw him perform live. I'd heard news that he was closing the club and immediately jumped on buying tickets for the last night he'd perform there. I think the tickets were like $85. The venue, pretty intimate, not big at all. While waiting in queue to go in, it was pretty obvious that word had spread that this was the last Prince show at the club. We were offered $1000 each for our tickets, but we'd flown to Vegas to see this show and the tickets were not for sale. I was a fan going in but damn I had no idea what a show this man could give. It's one thing to play his albums. It's an entirely different thing to see him perform live.

You can get an idea here.

TBH, it sounds like a gathering of emotional wrecks easily influenced by pop culture to create an emotional bond with someone you don't even personally know. Do you think Prince would cry if you dropped dead?

These overemotional reactions seem like they are pretty common in the US, and apparently in Canada as well. Not that long ago I discovered that sometimes when people see a good movie at the theater on that side of the pond, they start applauding when it's over. I was talking to a friend about this and we both laughed our asses off. We cannot imagine people react like that here. You would be seen as a complete weirdo when you would clap after seeing a movie. Are you crazy? Who do you clap for? The 18 year old highschool dropout working the projector? What the fuck. Overemotional weirdos.
