I would be careful with branding an exact match domain as the dot com. In my mind, people will type it in and then more often than not, just automaticaly add dot com after. Because of that, I would make sure to have something to set us apart.

If they are "super established" you are wasting your time. They can use ICANN to take whatever you buy if it is an exact match. Parked sites are different.
