I was a early backer of Oculus. But I half bailed-out when facebook did the buy-out. Since I have seen what the drivers are sending back for info on the user, I backed-out the rest of the way with Oculus.
But even better VR is available from HTC/Valve and soon StarVR and who knows who is next.
I thought the steam video was the best demo to date for one to realize what VR is since it is hard to describe with words and looks a bit dorky watching someone with a HMD and you can't understand the immersion seeing what they see on a 2D screen.
FYI
A cardboardVR device only gives you the idea of the concept. Does not compare to a full HMD like the HTC Vive.
But if you have not experienced VR, get a Google cardboard for less than $5 delivered on ebay and use your smartphone.
Heck, badoink and others are giving them away.
You will never have as much fun under $10 in your life.Comment

Used to use VR1 headset all the time till totally outdated along with joystick handle. It was scssi had to work on NT 600x480 pixels mates all played it till fell over each night it really did fuck with eyes and balance. Made belly gunning in flight sims awesome and so was wolfenstein. Would love to check out some modern equiptment.Comment

It is awesome and the possibilities are amazing but as i have noted before the environment has to be cgi (as was the case in both the demos here) for it to exploit its true potential you have to do way more than just shoot 360 degree video.

I'm obviously missing something, I just can't get excited by any of the clips shown here. Guess I need to get some of these cardboard glasses mentioned, because I've been the latecomer to too many parties to count over the years, don't want to miss this one as well if it's a very different experience than what I've seen so far (obviously just on my pc watching vids like these ones).

Yes, If you were thinking about buying the S7, the GearVR is the ticket to GOOD cheap VR.
But I do DEMO Cardboard with a old S4 all the time. Keep it in the car and when I go to the local inebriation facility, they all ask me to bring it in to take it for a spin.
Works pretty good for demo purposes.

I tried one in the mall. Absolutely fantastic. will be huge for games and movies and another damp squib for online porn.

While all of this is very cool, I don't know if I want to be jumping around and swinging my arms to play a game. I'm a fit person, but I want my gaming experience to be more passive on a physical level. I'll probably settle on Occulus Rift because the setup isn't like building a mocap studio (who really has a spare room?), less space is needed, and I like the idea of using an Xbox controller and sitting in one spot.
I've also been seeing in review/comparisons that the Rift is more comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and has built in headphones, which the Vive does not.
Anyone else have the same feeling when it comes to this tech?Comment
