    Anyone here do HIIT training?

I tried it the first time today and holy shit! I couldn't finish one complete round without throwing up. I've been lifting weights and doing cardio my entire life, but this is entirely different. I couldn't believe how quickly I got gassed. It's been an hour since I stopped, and I'm still breathing heavy.

Three times a week is all you need.

I was into Tabata for a while, but now I just do hill sprints. I really believe HIIT can make you a walking fat burner.

Maybe people think it's odd that a grown man who works out is conffused about strength and endurance and aerobic and aneoribic energy systems.

Funny, i've had the opposite experience here. Found a wealth of knowledge from many people who exercise for all different reasons and goals.

Got some great advice from choopa phil on eating, sperbonzo was brilliant with tips on training for running.

not really.. i like doing a run before working out, and i have found HIIT, or going over 15 minutes, kinda lowers the energy for weight lifting

i use the idea for hyperextensions / side bends for the hyperextension bench, and try and do it after the run, so HR is already up.. then after a full body weight set, do another 5-10 sprint at the end

                        Round 1 (No Breaks):
                        1. 10 Jumping Jacks
                        2. 10 Burpees
                        3. 10 Mountain Climbers
                        4. 10 Plank to Pushup
                        5. Jump Rope for 1 minute

                        Rest for 1 Minute.

(repeated that four times, adding 5 reps to each set. So round one was 10, round two 15, 20, 25)

                        Round 2 (No Breaks)
                        1. 10 Walk Outs
                        2. 10 Leaping Lunges
                        4. 10 Speed Skaters
                        5. 10 Kettleball Lunges
                        6. Jump Rope for 1 minute

(repeated that four times, adding 5 reps to each set. So round one was 10, round two 15, 20, 25)

There were two more rounds but I had to throw in the towel. My trainer said this was a beginner program. I would hate to see what the fucking professional program looks like! The mountain climbers are a mother fucker!

it never needs to be that complex though. The goal is high intensity tapping into your vo2 max levels. You can do that on an exercise bike at home even. Just warm up slow.. then burn for 30 seconds, hard as you can. 2 mins slow, catch your breath... then burn for 30. See how many rounds you can do before you have nothing left. After that you can increase to 45 and then some but anything too long defeats the purpose, or means you aren't giving it everything with your burn. HIIT doesn't need to be a full body movement to be effective, probably shouldn't be.

Nothing wrong with doing all that shit you are doing but its a bit all over the place and can risk injury at high intensity speeds. In other words you can't 'sprint' with kettle bells.

Never found HIIT, cross fit style training to be for me, not that it's hard since I have done bootcamp training at gyms before, even thou I did not need it.
For me a simple kettle bell workout helps with all the heavy breathing joint movements to help me with staying flexible after most workout's.
The basic kettle bell swing kills me after a workout.

Wish I can give you advice on this.

I'll second what Glen said....movement is movement basically. You can lay on the ground and flail your arms around wildly and still achieve the same goal. I'm not saying to do that, but no need to make everything complex.

Wish I can give you advice on this.
More power to you Rob if you can keep it up. I am all for anyone young or old who
wants to doing better for themselves when it comes to working out.
You bring up a good point actually. HIIT is not for everyone. It's more of an advanced approach to fat burning specifically and is more important for athletics training than just a regular maintenance thing. I still don't like long and slow cardio routines though. Well, unless you are doing some marathon training that is.

Not sure i meant that really. I mentioned the exercise bike because it is a safe choice for intense movement. As opposed to a tread mill. If you do sprints on that you WILL fall on your face. Elliptical is doable but still not safe for sprint work. Flailing sounds like an injury waiting to happen heh

i use the idea for hyperextensions / side bends for the hyperextension bench, and try and do it after the run, so HR is already up.. then after a full body weight set, do another 5-10 sprint at the end

HIIT is a way the fitness industry has found to sell all sorts: proteins, magazines, sponsorship, ..

Downside of HIIT is the high potential for injuries. It is advertised as being more efficient than long slow cardio but nothing beats a long slow cardio.

You find tons of tabata vids on youtube that claim you only need 4mn / day but they forget to take into account the necessary 15mn proper warm up + 10mn cool down

I got some friends doing the insanity workout (packed with HIIT) and they all get injured at some point. Admittedly because the form is incorrect, but still.

Wanna burn off the extra fat, 2 hours jog on Saturday and 2 small jogs during the week.

                                                2x/week - beckham's hiit workout

Here's Beckham's workout from his first year with the Galaxy and the Men's Health modified version for average guys. I'm the same size as him (6ft, 170) and have always been in good shape so when I did it I modified the modified version to where it would be almost as difficult as beckham's.

Life and Fitness Tips from David Beckham at Men's Health.com

2x/week - kettle bell core workout

if you haven't worked out with kettle bells, either take a class or work with a trainer until you learn proper form and get a better sense of how your body responds

2x/week - whatever you want, switch it up as necessary

could be typical weightlifting type things, a long bike ride, tennis lessons, etc. whatever works. figure it out. if you're a retard who needs to have everything fed to you on a spoon, you deserve to be fat and this workout is not for you.

                                                Rest on the 7th Day.

                                                DIET

                                                post-workout smoothies with whey protein
get 30+ grams of fiber every day (preferably w/o using supplements)
eat high protein foods as much as often. counting is really not necessary just know what is good and what is not and try to do what is good.

The sprinter didn't get this body by jogging.

You're more likely to injure the knees from the repetitive stress of continuously bouncing on them for long periods of time. Jogging is mostly vertical (the worst kind) force exerted on joints vs sprinting which is mainly forward. Also, sprinting can spike your growth hormone and help build muscle. Jogging can eat muscle. Just helping you get the memo so you're not dishing out more bad advice.

People who don't do HIIT -- from what I've seen personally -- is they can't get comfortable with being uncomfortable. All those people are either fat or skinny fat.

                                                        I disagree

                                                        - on the joints issue: you see elderlies running marathon, how many 65+ years old sprinters do you see?

                                                        - the picture is misleading and is in fact illustrating my point. This is typically what the fitness industry use to make $$ because it can only sell what is visible and looks good.
I would argue that the sprinter on the photo LOOKS good but the marathoner has a strong heart.
Furthermore, the sprinter on the photo is not looking like that by simply running, he lifts weights and possibly take steroids. And finally, if the marathoner wanted to look better, well he would eat more and lifts, but maybe that's not his goal so you cannot compare. There are numerous interviews of Arnold Schwarzenegger saying that at some point in his career he was running long distances up to half marathon to shed fat.

On a final point, marathoners do interval training and tempo runs. It is a lot harder than bodybuilding HIIT. Try running full on for 2 miles a few times.
