Depends on the task (and the employee). If it's grunt work - as in, do this simple shit over and over again - then not much interaction. As long as the work gets done I don't care how or when they do it.
As for anything 'creative' then it's more hands-on and more communication. No one likes to be micro-managed but you also can't be totally absent either. My Affiliate Programs:

Once per year one is chosen at random and beaten to death with a steel dildo.
The rest work quite efficiently for the next year."As pornographers we must act responsibly! ;))"- Nickatilynx

Depend in how good your team is. If you hire random guys overseas, you need to be behind all the time. If you have nice guys and you pay well, you can relax more. I love to work as a team.

I've dealt with both creative thinkers and brain dead mofos. If ya gotta detail every single step out ya might as well do it yourself.

Varies with each individual.
Some are best left to their own devices. Others require frequent supervision and direction.
A good manager is one who recognizes his employee's strengths and weaknesses and knows when to step in and when to back off.Comment

If they are over 35 you can usually let them do their magic. Anyone under 30 seems completely useless and flakey in my experience. Also watch what kind of car they pull up in. If it is a lowered and customized Honda Civic then never consider hiring them regardless of race, age of gender. Also when you interview them make sure they have the ability to feel empathy toward another human being as sociopaths will destroy your business..Comment

Everybody but complete dickholes prefers the second option. The problem is, only a few people can work that way.
Personally, I set metrics and offer rewards and imply consequences. Also, whenever I encounter an asshole, I follow this path: do they produce? publicly humiliate them. If they chill out, they stay. If they don't, fire them, regardless of the consequences. If they don't produce, instantly fire them. Seeing assholes get fired is good for everyone. Half the time after they're gone, you find out they were really much worse than you thought. However, I've never managed a manager. I'm not sure that works for layers.Comment

It depends on the size of the company on how you handle employees. It also depends on the quality of people you hire. If you have to micromanage your employees, then you probably shouldn't have hired them in the first place. If you have to micromanage your managers, then you should have never promoted them to management.

Standing behind them or continually answering their questions teaches them to wait for you to do everything.
Even the lowest of jobs can be done without a manager behind them. If they're hired and directed correctly.Comment
