:stop Walmart is closing hundreds of stores and laying off thousands of employees

A Walmart employee in Walpole, Massachusetts.

Walmart is closing 269 stores and laying off thousands of employees.

The move will affect more than 16,000 employees, including 10,000 in the US.

The closings include 154 locations in the US â?? 102 of which are the companyâ??s smallest stores, called Walmart Express, which have been in pilot since 2011.

Walmart is closing the stores to shift resources to Walmartâ??s Supercenters and smaller-format Neighborhood Market stores.

Walmart will also shut down 23 Neighborhood Markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers, and four Samâ??s Clubs. All the stores will close by the end of the month.

The company said it would try to place laid-off employees at other Walmart stores.

Employees who arenâ??t hired by nearby locations will get 60 days of pay and severance if eligible, as well as rĂ©sumĂ© and interview skills training, the company said.

The decision to close stores is difficult and we care about the associates who will be impacted,â? Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. â??We invested considerable time assessing our stores and clubs and donâ??t take this lightly. We are supporting those impacted with extra pay and support, and we will take all appropriate steps to ensure they are treated well.â?

Walmart has more than 11,000 stores worldwide, including 4,655 stores in the US.

The retailer said it still planned to open more than 100 US stores in the next year, including 50 to 60 Supercenters, 85 to 95 Neighborhood Markets, and seven to 10 Samâ??s Club locations. Internationally, Walmart plans to open 200 to 240 stores within the next year.

Walmart saved my ass last Sunday night. My kid was home from college for the weekend and was supposed to drive back for class on Monday morning. It had been -18f the night before and it killed the battery in his car. Walmart was the only place open at 10:30pm that sold bats.

Thanks Walmart

Upscale areas are not too big on Walmart.

Looks to me like they are closing a complete line of stores, that I never knew existed, because they did not make enough money whereas the same expenditures could go towards a real Walmart and make money.

Yep. Just as anyone with any sense tried to tell people when all that bullshit about paying people more than they are worth started.

Now all those people won't have ANY job.

Interesting move on their part. Obviously the bottom line is the most important thing.

In all fairness though, 60 days severance, retraining and resume assistance is damn generous to offer grunt employees.

True that...hopefully they will take that money and buy enough crack to overdose and not need a new "job" ending more than 1 problem - WIN WIN

As it should be..right? Do you run your business as a charity or to make money?

I argued with some of the folks on here in all the "raise the minimum wage" threads over the last year.
And I predicted (which isn't that hard to do running a business) that IF you started overpaying unskilled labor that the result would be job losses.

And I had more than one person on here tell me I didn't know what I was talking about that Walmart is "rich" and would never shut down stores.

I'm afraid that this is only the beginning.

Young men and women already can't find starter jobs for themselves out of high school.
But just watch what happens with automation at McDonalds and other fast food restaurants very soon.
No way they are gonna pay a fry cook $15 an hour...or the person taking your order over the speaker.
They are going to update that stuff and you'll be putting your order in on a touchscreen or an app. And putting the fries in the grease will be done by automation.

Get ready. LOTS of people are about to lose their jobs.
And then the people screaming for a "living wage" will find out that the wages they were making for unskilled labor were a lot better than making ZERO.

I know a guy that works for a Walmart distribution center. Oddly enough he makes pretty good money, about $20/hr, so its nothing like the fools in the stores. what is fucked up is every year after christmas Walmart gives them the option, get your hours cut for 3 months or get laid off and collect unemployment..

This is how companies like Walmart operate and use tax payers money to float their profits into the green.. They do it even worse with the employees at the stores..

Then you should be happy they will shut down those stores so those poor employees won't have to toil anymore.

I'm sure that all those people losing their jobs are gonna raise a fist in solidarity with your viewpoint as they realize they now have NO income at all.

As for "using taxpayers money"...if the govt. weren't taxing us and spending it like drunken sailors and giving away the "taxpayer money" then that wouldn't be possible would it?

If the govt. was dumb enough to set up tax breaks for me as a pornographer...I'd be a fool not to take advantage of it. You would do the same.

Prices just went up here in Cali at some places to cover the recent min wage increase that kicked in.

Walmart can't raise prices to cover , that's completely counter to their business model.

I went to Wendy's a couple of days ago. Got a single, large fries, large coke, and a large chili.
$10.65!!!!

When I pulled up to the window and paid I told the guy at the window that it's cheaper now to eat at a "real" restaurant and they are gonna price themselves out of the market.

He said "yeah" that they had just raised all the prices earlier in the week.

Fast food was not only convenient, but it was always a cheap meal too. Not anymore.

Folks can get a pretty tasty burger meal at red robins or chili's for the same price as fast food these days, can call in prior and pickup quick and easy.

The root cause is too many people sharing a pot that stops them from buying anything other than the bare essentials. The solution is, fewer people all having a slightly bigger slice of the cake. Giving each a bit more to spend at places like Walmart, which ensures their profits.

Paul, not everyone is going to have "higher wages". And no business is going to be successful paying unskilled labor high wages that they don't deserve.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to see how things work.

If I make $1 a day and it costs me 85 cents a day to live I am getting by. If they raise wages and now I make $2 a day, but since everything now costs more to create...it costs me $1.70 to live.

I gained NOTHING.

But the poorest people have just lost out. They suddenly have no access to low priced food and clothing and goods.

You keep raising minimum wage and what you get is stores closing and people being fired.

It's happening right now. And still people want to babble on about forcing businesses to overpay unskilled labor.

Businesses are closing because a large section of the population doesn't have enough disposable cash.

How many memberships has the bank crash cost you?

There comes a point where the money is so concentrated among so few, it hurts an economy.

The root problem is Population v GDP is going in the wrong direction with a tiny % getting all the growth. Fewer people lead to more sharing more. and spending more. A billionaire only needs 1 membership to jerk off, 1,000 millionaires need 1,000 memberships. Just an example of how money circulates.

The billionaire normally creates the jobs that allow 1000 people to buy memberships. When you make it unprofitable for the billionaire to keep helping to provide those 1000 memberships they close shop. Thus you just lost 1000 memberships.

Businesses are closing because the climate to make money is more difficult. Normally the climate is put in place by idiotic government policy that makes it to hard to operate. There is more wealth in the world then ever. Wealth is not a 1 sum game.

Im always surprised when "business" people talk like this. Well im not because youre opinions are not ones a real businesan makes. Or a successful one anyway.

MetaMan is right on the money with that.

Paul, if you were still shooting...and you could get $3,000 a scene (like you talked Fabian into paying...heh-heh), and you paid the girl you were shooting $1,000...that would be your business model.

You have to pay for the location. You have to pay for your camera and lighting. You took the time in your life to learn your skills.

Now, the govt. comes in and says "no". You have to pay the model $2,000.

So what are you going to do?

You are going to RAISE PRICES so you can make what you did before or you are going out of business.

That's exactly what's gonna happen Squealer

The answer to people making a good living is not to try and raise wages artificially for unskilled labor. Especially when the economy is weak.

The answer is to get the economy roaring again. When GDP of 2% has become the "norm" over the last 8 years...things are going to remain stagnant.

Govt. policies that get companies returning to the U.S. (less taxes on them) will help get the GDP back to the annual 4% that is needed to make the economy hum.

Paying unskilled and uneducated worker bees $15 an hour to ask "Do you want fries with that" is a recipe for disaster and drives companies and jobs away.

Many companies have 4 employees doing what 3 employees could do if managed and trained properly.

You start out with $10 an hour, that is a cost of $40 an hour with 4 employees (not including everything else like unemployment tax, benefits, etc.) Now you raise the wage to $12 an hour which accounts to a cost of $48 an hour, that's a pretty decent bump.

Company wises up and does one of three things:
1) Eliminate one job, the remaining 3 employees pick up the slack and they save money
2) Invest in alternate labor methods that are now more cost efficient (robots, outsourcing, etc.) and they save money
3) Close shop and nobody has a job

The workforce does not win in any of those scenarios. The company owner wins in 2 of them. Stronger companies will work out the details and make it work and actually come out ahead when all is said and done (the irony here is this will create even more of the wealth distribution issue we keep hearing people crying about,) while the workforce takes another big punch in the gut.

The robots are coming. Lower skilled workforce is better off not expediting that. Unfortunately for them, they are far too shortsighted to see the train they are running towards full blast.
