    Friends Reunited launched in the year 2000 and was bought by broadcaster ITV for £175m ($250m) in 2005.

      I remember they started to charge £5. This was when facebook came out and was (still is) free.

      To be honest I thought they would keep it free when ITV took it over and just used it as a big data storage and a way to promote ITV.

      Even if the site had cost £1 million, that would have been a huge loss.

      But £175 million.

      Its a different world, to just be able to loose £175 million.

        I lost £175 million the other day. Was really quite upset for a while but then I found it down the side of the sofa.

              Free is the only way to make money real now. All you need is the content the people want to see and sell advertising off the back of it.

              The exceptions are industries mainstream won't advertise on. We had porn companies funding the adverts on the sites killing sales.
