Paul, the affiliate side of porn did not put porn into a coma. What has happened since around 2005 is a few people copied youtube and to populate the "tube" is they stole all the content. This was "VERY" effective and they stole all the traffic by doing so.
So naturally, conversions are harder for a regular old site.

Janitorial work is frowned upon on being a low skilled job filled with bottom end people, possibly true to some extent but there is still money in it if done right.

It wasn't the affiliates fault. It was the sponsors who created and funded the problem. People claiming the 199 consuming free porn would never buy, so the 1 who did buy was the win. Was bullshit. That's counting views not clicks.
Anyone comparing views to sales knows the truth.
The effect took a while for people to realise and it had to include the element of more free porn given away year by year. "Stealing" the content is an excuse we use. Stolen or bought the effect would have been the same, just slower.
