It's been said that the man who planned the attack on Pear Harbor (Isoroku Yamamoto) said ""I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." If he did say this or something similar, it was very true. Japan completely underestimated the Untied States in all areas, including manpower, resolve, and material and manufacturing - We could physically build ships as fast they could sink them and we had nearly unlimited resources.

Germany did the same with Russia - Russia was huge and vast, and had unlimited manpower.

Attacking Pearl Harbor was the biggest military mistake of all time.

Do you have some sort of board-watch script, that alerts you anytime there is something remotely close to defence/arms related, so you can come and regurgitate your brainwashed talking points?

Are you just a dick with a board watch script that alerts you to when Rochard posts anything?

While living in Pearl Harbor when I was in the Navy, we would go out to ford island for different kinds of training and you can still see the bullet holes left over from that attack. One of the main points that the Japanese used for navigation was the dive tower on the sub base, my barracks were right next to that.

Also, Sunday, 7 December 1941, the USS Tautog SS199 was at the Submarine Base when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Within minutes of the first Japanese bomb explosions on Ford Island, Tautog's gun crews went into action and, with the help of Narwhal (SS-167) and a destroyer, shot down a Japanese torpedo bomber as it came over Merry Point. The Tautog went on to sink more tonnage than any other submarine or any other ship in ww2. The submarine I was on was the USS Tautog, SSN 639.

In WW2, Submarines made up 2 % of the fleet and sank around 90% of the ships( By Tonnage)

He also supposedly said something along the lines of...he could raise hell for about six months and then the tide would turn and that was also the case. It is my understanding that the Japanese never intended to defeat the U.S. but instead intended to keep us at bay long enough for them to consolidate their hold on other Asian countries and then sue us for peace. What they did not expect at all was our demand for their "unconditional surrender"...which demand was ultimately agreed to but did prolong the war with them.

That was exactly what their goal was. They didn't want to take on the United States directly, but instead destroy the US Pacific fleet so they could could continue their rampage through the Pacific for six months to a year.

The biggest blunder was they missed all of the US aircraft carriers - None of them were in port that morning. While the attack was a huge blow to the Pacific Fleet, with the three aircraft carriers still running around the US never really lost it's footing and was able to attack a short time later.

I don't believe our involvement in Vietnam or Iraq was illegal.

First off you can argue it's never illegal to wage war. There is no international law that says "you cannot wage war" or that it is illegal to do. When Saddam attacked and raped Kuwait, it wasn't illegal.

I don't believe our involvement in Vietnam was wrong. At the time, we feared communism. Communism was coming to get us, and we had to stop them in their tracks. If we failed to stop them, all of Asia would fall to communism. This was unacceptable at the time. Right now we are debating here on GFY what the United States / NATO / Western World should do about Muslim Extremeists - Not very much different than how we felt in the late 1960s.

As for Iraq, you are right - what happened in Iraq was illegal. Iraq violated a peace treaty. Most people forget what happened there - Iraq invaded Kuwait, we went into Kuwait and kicked their asses, and the Iraqis signed a peace treaty - which they violated.

I don't have a "naive romantic world view". I love military history.
