Buying a web server New or Used?
Hey Guys,
I might buy my own web server but I know nothing about them. Does anyone have any URL's to read about them? Does anyone have any used that would be interested in selling them? Does anyone know a good place to get web servers? Thanks in Advance. |

Uhh...nothing overly special about a web server. It's just a computer. As any computers goes, you can spec it out however fits for you. In most cases, it'll need to be rackmount. A lot of RAM helps.
If you want something pre-made, Dells are nice and you can get some sweet deals right now. Why don't you just get a dedicated server if you don't know much about running your own? |

I just am curious about upgrading my current server and getting better performance. I do have a dedicated already. What are some prices we are looking at? Also, what is an amount of gigs/MHZ ratio you need?

depends. will they allow you to send in your own box? a lot of ISP's require you to lease one from them. in that case, you have to order the upgrades from the ISP.
memory is your biggest spot, most likely. unless the chip is antique, a couple hundred mhz won't make a lot of difference. a pretty slow machine can run a ton of hits. get 512-1gb ram, you'd be good. anything over 1ghz should run plenty of stuff, depending on your site size

Depending on what you're serving, you'll want as much RAM as you can get, and some really fast drives. Processor speed isn't nearly as important, but don't fully neglect it.
I'd still put my money on a good RAID setup these days, but IDE is a lot cheaper and catching up performance wise. |

Thank you iroc409,
No, I was given permission to buy my own web server and keep it there. I guess I should see how well my current server holds up. It's responding to clicks pretty well right now. |

Offcourse you could always just lease a server at Dell or something for a monthly fee.

Servers Can be of Many Varietys How they run is Totally Dependent on the Ammount of Ram and The configuration of the Server.... Apache runs normally at about 4-7 megs per Each server it spawns if you are looking to have alot of Bandwith Pushed you may want to have over 1 gig ram ... a good tech can configure apache down to about 3-5 megs per server spawned..... now this will help dramtically if you are pushing in excess of 40 Megabits .. Nothing two fancy on processor is needed really unless you are doing alot of mysql... |
