Study confirms religion is a hate monger training ground

The findings ?robustly demonstrate that children from households identifying as either of the two major world religions (Christianity and Islam) were less altruistic than children from non-religious households?.

Older children, usually those with a longer exposure to religion, ?exhibit[ed] the greatest negative relations?.

The study also found that ?religiosity affects children?s punitive tendencies?. Children from religious households ?frequently appear to be more judgmental of others? actions?, it said.

Muslim children judged ?interpersonal harm as more mean? than children from Christian families, with non-religious children the least judgmental. Muslim children demanded harsher punishment than those from Christian or non-religious homes.

At the same time, the report said that religious parents were more likely than others to consider their children to be ?more empathetic and more sensitive to the plight of others?.

Religious children are meaner than their secular counterparts, study finds | World news | The Guardian

it's been fun watching this study go from 'kids from religious families less generous' to your current title of:

'Study confirms religion is a hate monger training ground'

When religion primarily teaches moralizing, shaming, quilting, judging, and retribution, then clearly it warps peoples' minds and convinces them that their own culturally osmosed beliefs are divinely inspired. It becomes a scapegoating pathology to justify ones own abhorrent behavior and feel that one has divine providence to be awful, especially when one believes that it is "Good" when God is awful.

When religion centres its teachings around curiosity about the natural world, the cultivation of genuine compassion for fellow beings, and the practices of introspection and meditation, then it is an indispensable tool. These can be thought of as secular teachings as well, but the word religion used to mean "careful contemplation of the divine." Categorizing people into camps of theists and atheists or believers and non-believers is not terribly useful. Within all of these groups exists the very real capacity to either separate human beings on superficial grounds or unite human beings based on a deeper and more profound understanding of life.

I've never understood why so many gladly label themselves as "atheists". I belive in no gods but I don't call my self an atheist as that seems silly to me.

Why would you want to classify yourself into a group because you don't belive in a fairytale? I surely wouldn't think of my self as being in any special group because I don't think santa is real or the tooth fairy.

I call it being a sane normal adult.. Religion has always been for the weak minded who need to be controlled and have excuses for things being the way they are.. It's a mental disorder..

People have helped billions.. The Red Cross has helped billions of people and no one ever says it's because they are a non Relgious origination..

Yes people of Relgious groups can be helpful to others, but so can non religious.. It's not just because they are Relgious, but rather because it's a large group which has the ability to act. Even the U.S. military has aided millions if not billions in between bombing them..

so what? you write that like you think i don't know that. but heads-up, just try and claim that the USA military helps people in an anti-USA thread and see how far that gets you at teh gfy.

nevertheless, to rephrase my post, i'm stating that in examining the fact that religion is a historical fact, when studying it you can see that it has helped billions of people. that doesn't denigrate non-religious help or the USA military. it's disengenous to exclaim religion IS a hate monger trauning ground when looking at the history of religion. just like it would be disengenous to claim religion does nothing but good.

An easy example that can be pointed to about the US military helping people, is the Army Core of Engineers.

They have built countless roads, dams bridges around the world that have helped millons. It doesn't matter if someone hates the US, they still can't refute that basic fact.

Ask them if Russia, the Chinese or any other military can come close to what the Army Core of Engineers has done and it will be a big fat no.

Atheist means just that, in your words atheist = sane normal adult (in regards to religion).
It is no big deal that it has a specific word. I mean would you be offended if instead of "atheist" they would say "non believer"?
It is merely a word to identify non believer, not some "group"
