    Ancient Romans used urine as toothpaste, mouthwash, and laundry detergent!

    It sounds gross, but we?ve all thought about using our own urine for mouth wash. No? Maybe it?s just me. Regardless, urine contains ammonia which is a natural teeth whitener and can actually be used to prevent you from getting cavities! So before you go to the dentist next, you know what to do. Another common use of urine was to clean clothes. Laundrymen used to set out jars in front of their shops and whoever was passing by could just pee into the jar. Whenever the jar became full, the laundrymen would bring the jar in and use it to clean clothes!

    I guess the ancient Romans enjoyed the smell of urine because these businesses were such money makers that emperors Nero and Vespasian both made urine taxes! Ancient Rome must have smelled like?well, you know. Check the source to learn more about Roman Urine!

      I read a dissertation on the parallels of the Roman Empire and modern western civilization, it's pretty interesting. It didn't have using piss as toothpaste, but it did show significant comparisons with the rise and fall of the empire. It's funny because Rome was sacked by the Visigoths, thought of as uneducated and dirty barbarians by the Romans, not worthy of their patronage. The U.S. and her allies think of Muslims as uneducated and dirty barbarians.

          That amonia from urine was also used to cure and colorize leather. I don't know if the Romans did it exactly, but ancient civilizations, from what I've read, did.

          The urine as mouthwash part I did not know about. I've known for some time that in extreme survival situations where no water is available one can rinse their mouth with it for moisture, and in the most extreme of circumstances even drink it.

          Which is pretty much the main reason I try to avoid being stranded in the desert. :D

                                                          Most animals in nature, lap up their own urine from time to time. It has extreme antibiotic properties and they aren't getting sick like we do, so drink up.
