Maybe not so much him personally but through the band as a whole and especially de la Rocha and Morello.

Critics have noted Rage Against the Machine for its "fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash."[1] Their lack of want for authority often relates to the anarcho-communism view.
I still like some of their music - I just have to tune out their leftist messages.

They have promoted and endorsed communist parties and movements in other countries (Peru, Mexico). And the "revolution" they refer to often in their music and comments is leftist speak for the tear-down of the capitalist system. No doubt if they could vote for a communist party in the US they would.

They weren't shy about it either:

i don't see it that way. i've been a RATM fan since the beginning and in that time i've yet to come across anything that shows they promote communism.

now what they do promote is revolution.
and they do use revolutionists to sometimes do that. but no where on the record do they claim to be communists or promote communism

Well I may be reading between the lines a little but I take the "revolution" they propose, when taken with their anti-capitalist message, to mean "communist revolution" - even if they don't explicitly use those words in their music. Their non-musical commentary seems to back that up.

Either Tom Morello wears that hat as a costume to a Halloween party or he wears it like a badge representative of his beliefs. Same for de la Rocha and his red star arm band. Who knows, maybe they are just poseurs trying to look cool and tap a niche or maybe we really have to take them at their word and believe they are serious.

And like I said - I like their music too. But I don't have to like their message.

Wouldn't that be the ultimate spin if their whole "revolution" and anti-capitalist thing was just a conscious gimmick used as a marketing tool to sell more records to angsty leftists? These days you never know.

people interpret RATM different ways i guess. morello may very well be a flaming pinko. i'd like to see someone ask him the question directly.

i can appreciate their message. anarchy, question authority, self-will are the words that come to mind for me describing their lyrics. that's just my interpretation though. not saying that's the bottomline. at the same time, i'm sure they are each millionaires and bang hot models.

I had a RATM hat in high school.

The logo on it was a communist star. No denying it. Straight up.

I loved that hat though. I would even wear it today, LOL.

Rage Against the Machine Official Store

Don't tell me they just liked the pretty star.

I had no idea this was even a question, kind of like wondering if Freddy Mercury was really gay or if Bob Marley smoked weed.

I am not necessarily a fan of Limp Bizkit and I like RATM but making a statement like that is just moronic.

RATM came after Faith No More, the Beasties, etc. so how is it that Rage gets credit for "inventing" anything?

Even their leftist punk shtick was done before by other bands.

I knew that Tom went to Harvard. Interesting that she went to Loyola, a respected school as well. Maybe not as elite as Harvard, but respected nonetheless.

Wow... didn't know his pop was a Mau Mau.

That is some heavy duty serious revolutionary street cred right there.

In my youth my parents were friends with a family whose father had his ear chopped off by the Mau Mau.

But RATM still was neither the first nor necessarily the best in their genre.
