    News Police vs. Handicap Parking

Officer's Parking Job Blasted on Social Media

A photo of a Niagara Regional Police cruiser in an accessible parking space shared on the Internet has sparked a review by the service.

The photo snapped at a Niagara Falls grocery store and posted by a Facebook user Saturday had been shared 836 times by Tuesday afternoon, with plenty of commenters chiming in about what they thought of the parking choice.

?So ignorant!? said one. ?Above the law,? said another.

The NRP used its official Twitter feed Tuesday to respond, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident are being reviewed.

The service said officers may need to take this type of action when calls for service ?dictate an urgent response.?

?It is always an expectation that officers will be considerate of the need to balance rapid response with the needs of the public they serve,? the NRP said.

NRP spokesman Const. Phil Gavin said police were called to the Zehrs parking lot at Morrison Street and Dorchester Road at about 1:15 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a young child, possibly two years old, hanging out the window of a moving vehicle. Two cruisers responded to the parking lot.

The service learned about the photo making the rounds on social media the next day.

Because of the number of direct messages to the NRP and social media posts about it, police decided to issue the statement.

?We were starting to take a lot of heat for it so we thought it would be an opportunity to address it,? Gavin said.

This is news? Cops don't have to follow the same rules as "ordinary citizens". Especially when it comes to driving.

I would love to see them spin this - they were responding to an emergency. There's no emergency in the handicapped space or next to it. If there was an emergency, they would have pulled up right next to it, by the curb, not parked and walked.

Now move along before you get arrested for resisting. Or worse.
