    Do any of you retards read books?

    Like the ones made out of paper?

    I have read a shitload of books, and I'm really excited about starting this new one. If you read actual books, what is your all time favorite book? What's your favorite genre? Author?

      Most of the books I read are business oriented or technical-- Kindle format I avoid reading paper. So maybe one or two a month.

      Reading is work. For entertainment: A movie a few times a week. No TV -- I don't need junk-food for the brain.

      Time is at a premium these days.

                  I read lots and have a lot of favorites from Mark Twain to Hemmingway to Joe R Lansdale

                  recently read "Cartel" by Don Winslow...highly recommend it

                          yes. in last months i discovered viktor pielevin, but to comprehend his books fully, you have to:
                          a) have them translated by really good translator to enjoy fully beauty of the language
                          b) maybe be from Europe or Russia..as his way of thinking is easier to understand if you are from this region - dont know about that actually, just my guess

                                  My favorites include: 1984, The Peoples History of the United States, Horton Hears a Who!


                                  I recently read "Homocide: A Year on the Killing Streets" by David Simon. It was a fascinating and detailed look at the work of homicide detectives in baltimore. (The writer created the show "The Wire") and it is recommended reading for all the wire fans out there.

                                      I recently dropped everything off at the goodwill, trunk load of books.

                                      I have 2 iPads, the 64GB iPad 4 is what I used for all my digital books. Get an amazon Kindle unlimited plan.

                                          I used to buy and read books all the time. At least a book a month or so, all physical, and all on paper. I have never fancied the e-reader style, so I have never bought or purchased an e-book...

                                          However I HAVE got really into audiobooks, that I can listen to while out and about. As such thats what I purchase these days.

                                          My fav authors are Stephen King and Dean R Koontz. Currently 'reading' Finders Keepers by Stephen King

                                                      These are the last 3 books I read:

                                                      You are not your brain, Jeffrey Schwartz
                                                      The power of mind, Eckhart Tolle
                                                      The monk who sold his Ferrari, Robin Sharma

                                                      As you can see, I have been reading mostly classics lately, but I think these books can make you think and that is basically my favorite genre. Regarding the authors, I like the way Tolle thinks and writes, but honestly I don't pay attention to the authors of the books I read, as long as I like what he or she writes.

                                                      Real paper books WTF! I can't read ebooks since I already spend too much time in front of the monitors

                                                                  I only read paper books, it adds some "soul" if you know what I means. E-books are no no for me, plus staring at the screen is not the activity I prefer to prolong if not needed.

                                                                                              Although I have a ton of paper books, I mostly use the Kindle store now. A lot of my books are about Nazi Germany, so I've had to remove those from sight because it look like I was a Nazi lover or something.

                                                                                              The last book I read was Helter Skelter about Charles Mansion and the murders, just finished it last night. I quickly rolled into "Failure Is Not An Option" by Gene Kranz. (I had no idea he was at NASA pretty much from day one.)

                                                                                              Recently I've been into autobiographies of musicians starting with the Beatles and then Freddie Mercury of Queen. Billy Idol was an interesting read. Remember the Cherry Pie girl? Her name is Bobbie Brown and her autobiographie was an interesting look at the hair band culture on the 1980s. I read about Guns & Roses also.

                                                                                                          I've tried the eBook thing, but it just doesn't work for me. I've been reading since I was a child and it's a way I not only learn, but release stress. Something about holding a book and turning the pages is comforting to me. But I only read fiction and educational, if it's technical I read online. Can't sit through a programming book.

                                                                                                          There are some good books so far. Here are some of my personal favorites, in no particular order.

                                                                                                          - Trinity by Leon Uris
                                                                                                          - Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet (I read World Without End as well, but didn't come close to Pillars)
                                                                                                          - Inge: A Girl's Journey Through Nazi Europe by Inge Joseph Bleier
                                                                                                          - The Game of Thrones Series by Martin
                                                                                                          - The Social Animal by Elliot Aronson
                                                                                                          - Anything by Patricia Cornwell --- yeah, yeah, it's dumb shit, but I love Kay Scarpetta and her hot little lesbian niece.
                                                                                                          - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee -- such a great book
                                                                                                          - 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene

                                                                                                          There are plenty more, those are the ones that just came to mind when I think of great books. I've read a lot of the classics, but I just can't get into them. Emily Bronte is decent, and Oscar Wilde isn't horrible.

I've read everything from Dickens and Hardy and Twain to Grisham and Stephen King, from Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke to Follett and Cussler, and back again. I'm currently reading one from Anne Rice called The Witching Hour, and before it I completed my second read-through of the existing five Game of Thrones books. I've also in past years poured through dozens of business and self-help books, Authors like Og Mandino, Littauer, and everyone's favorite (or should be) Carnegie.

                                                                                                                  Favorites? Way too many to list. Name one of my favorite authors and it's often too difficult to name a single favorite. One of the sci-fi series I found quite interesting was titled The Moat in God's Eye, by Niven & Pournelle.
                                                                                                                  The First Americans series by Sarabande, and likewise The Clan of the Cavebear series by Auel were super great reads.
                                                                                                                  The Bastard, aka; The American Bicentennial series by John Jakes.
                                                                                                                  Just about every novel James A Michener ever wrote was an epic series unto itself, Chesapeake was the last one I read by him and it was terrific.


                                                                                                                  But I think the real question in this thread is the 'why' rather than just listing the 'what'.                                                                                                                       I'll be honest, book five was a mofo to get through. I wanted to read the series before watching the HBO series, and I'm glad I did. But book five...wow. And it's not like it's an easy 400 pager you can finish in a day. I already pre-ordered book six.

                                                                                                                              I'm looking forward to book 6 as well. It's been a long time coming. I'm wondering though, if there's to be a book 7, how many more years we'll be waiting for that? I'm hoping beyond hope that Martin will surprise us all and finish out the series before I'm dead and buried.

                                                                                                                              One that I enjoyed many years ago was called The Sleeping Lady: The story of David Carpenter, aka "The Trailside Killer" by Robert Graysmith. I've noticed over the years since the early 80's that he is rarely if ever included in conversations about notorious serial killers, yet he was definitely among the worst of the lot. Not THE worst, but close. Quite an engrossing read nontheless.

                                                                                                                                      Yes, almost every day. Belletristic mostly, only on paper, my all time favorite is "One Flew over The Cuckoo's Nest", Ken Kesey.

GRRM's journey to bummersville kinda makes my interest in his stuff peter out, although I've read all of his short stories and most if his novels and books he's edited.

Hopefully all those whetstones are doing their job

                                                                                                                                                          I didn't use to read much till I got my ipad and now my samsung tablet. Since 2013 I've read 24 out of 27 Harlan Coben books. I haven't read the 3 that are geared towards teens yet. I also liked the 3 Tucker Max books.

                                                                                                                                                              Currently 621 books in Kindle. 103 in iBooks.

                                                                                                                                                              I probably buy two or three books on these platforms a week and read them.

                                                                                                                                                              Saves bookshelf space and less shit to gather dust.

                                                                                                                                                                              Read real books only. Not as much as I once did, maybe 2 a month down from 1 or 2 a week. Fiction and history.
