Anyone know anything about seizures?

I just got back from taking my 6 year old son to the hospital to have an EEG run. He has hit his head (not even hard enough to bruise) 4 times in the last 10 months, two of those times knocked him unconscious and the last two times he has had convulsions afterward. The pediatrician ordered an EEG today. I'm not sure what the hell could cause this and the fucking neurologist has me waiting until Friday. I'm in an absolute panic. He's my youngest - my baby and i'm so scared of what they will tell me. Does anyone know anything about this subject?

You've got mail. I rambled quite a bit because I don't know what you are specifically looking for, but what ever I didn't cover, just email me back with your questions.

Not hard enough to bruise, BUT, hard enough to be unconscious and go into convulsions?

So in other words, he has had some nasty head injuries? what was he doing to get them?

seizures, are usually not a good thing. They tend to develop quickly and become more often. But usually they are curable through operation, where a neurosergeon removes the part of the brain which is causing the seizures, can have side effects though. But this is in the extreeme cases.

actually no he's never had any serious injuries of any kind. He was playing with the waterhose almost a year ago and slipped in the water and hit his head on the garage floor (no bump, bruise or anything) and went unconscious, right after school started he was in PE and bumped heads with another little boy (once again no bruising) went unconscious. We were in the drug store and he bent down to get something and bumped his head on a shelf (no bruising) and fell backwards in a convulsion and the last time yesterday was playing at daycare and bumped his head and had a convulsion with no unconsciousness. But he's never had any kind of head trauma other than these things or bumping his head on the cabinet or something every kid does. He does demonstrate an extreme anger buildup sometimes though and i'm wondering if there is any connection between that and this or if he just acts like my asshole ex husband.

Now was the hit on the head caused by the seizures? In other words was he mildly seizing and that's what caused him to hit his head? My son had a seizure when he was six and after MONTHS of testing, (in which he had 3 more seizures) they found him to have benign rolandic epilepsy and put him on dilantin for 2 years. He has now been seizure free for years.

I remember thinking what you must be right now. You wan't me to wait HOW LONG?? No do it now. Sound familiar?? It's really not the end of the world even though you are probably feeling that way now.

Don't PANIC! yeah right, I know I did. But people who don't understand seizures PANIC. Do some research online and see that many children have it and most of the time it's the mild, TREATABLE one I mentioned above and goes away with the onset of puberty in most kids.

Good luck and stay as calm as you can, don't scare him. My son was convinced he was going to die because I was so worried about him. Believe me, no child should have to feel that way. He was more scared about my worrying than he was about the possibility of having another seizure.

Does he have sleeping probs? Nightmares, walking in his sleep, being tired even though he was in bed for the night, etc?

no the seizure was after the bump on the head. that's why they said he had a low threshold for pain and that was his way to deal with it by creating a diversion. Fucking ER quacks. And the only other problem he seems to have other than this is his anger problem. Otherwise, he is a happy healthy beautiful six year old boy who likes hot chickeys.

Now after reading your reply. It wasn't there when I posted above. I feel he is seizing and that is what seems like a fall. Although he is most likely starting to seize before these events happened, rather than vice versa.

Lack of sleep lowers the seizure threshold so make sure he gets LOTS until he can be tested.

Maybe he didn't "slip" in the water, maybe his seizure started and that's what appeared to be him "slipping" in the water.

Some other signs of epilepsy in kids are staring spells, (vegging out etc) You talk to them and they seem to be ignoring you for minute but they are really having a seizure.

Has your son done anything in his life that makes you wonder now?

I can relate to the anger thing too lol. I always wonder if my ex assholes tempermant passed down or if it had to do with the neurological probs. It's most likely a combo of both. Some people's seizures show as anger, screaming, fits, etc with no actually visible seizing so it make me wonder.

Hey being a paramedic for ten years I seen and learned alot about them, How old is he? Does he play alot of video games? as somone pointed out are you sure he didnt have the seziure before he bumped his head and that is why he bumped it and went out? They can be very scary one thing NEVER PUT anything in his mouth when he is sezezing just protect his head dont try to hold him down PROTECT HIS HEAD OK!! when he is prostictal stage, (after the sez, is over he is out of it etc.. ) just make sure his airway is clear and remember dont stick your fingers in his mouth if he vomits turn him to his side just keep his airway protected at all times make sure he is breating on his own etc..

Good luck and would hate to be in your shoes I know when my kids are hurt or sick it kills me.

TOM

the eeg should show the problem, if not there are other tests. Just keep an eye on him, while bathing most importantly.
I hope every thing turns out well for him.

My son would be so "out of it" for about a half hour after a seizure, he KNEW his name, school name, etc but for the life of him, he could not SPEAK those words.

Seizures are a freaky thing. MOST are not as bad as they look. Seems it hurts us parents more than it hurts the kids.

My son seems normal in every way to expect for his occasional temper tantrums (he is 13 now so maybe its testosterone lol) and his sleep walking, etc was a combination of sleep apnea and epilepsy.

They sometimes go hand in hand in kids because one causes the other, that's why I asked those questions.

he could have seized and that caused the falls. I wasn't with him either time. Once he was spending the night at my parents and the other he was at school so I guess it's totally possible. Both times though they said he fell backwards unconscious, then sat up and then his eyes rolled back in his head and he went out again. ER docs did a CT scan the second time and it showed clear I guess that's why they did the EEG thing this time. I felt so bad for him. I know it didn't hurt but he looked like a little limp hellraiser with all those wires sticking out of him. The only other thing i've ever noticed about his health is he is extremely scrawny. Not sure if it's genetic or what his father was always puny and i've always been pretty skinny. His older brother has ADHD but no other major probs. His dad had some "behavioral" probs when he was young which I think was ADD but he never was diagnosed so not sure.
