It's a lot of hit and miss, you need a big budget to pick out the good spots.

You definitely have to make more tests with bigger sites.

As said above, affiliate marketing involves a lot of testing.
On our network, you could for example set a campaign on several spots and on several geos (say Tier 1 countries to start with), then simply pause the least profitable ones.
Once you have a winning combination of spots / geos, you can start adding other countries to the mix and see how it goes.

If you are targeting global traffic to a dating site you will not make money. Ever. You need to dial into the GEOs that work best for the specific site. Just because a dating site is in English doesn't mean it's going to convert everyone around the world, you have to look at their billing options and their different payouts for each individual country. If they pay you $5 per lead for US/UK/CA you may only be getting $1 for India etc.

Localized dating products are by far a better way to go, they come fully translated for their local market and mean you can separate the campaigns in the ad networks, optimizing each one individually for that specific product/market/country. You will also want to translate your ads and any landing pages you control that are outwith the site you are pushing, you will get a much better CTR on the ads > lander > end product than if you go worldwide with English.

You should also be using some advanced tracking software like voluum or imobitrax to help you segment the traffic and optimize it based on the tracking tokens each individual ad network offers, these are a huge advantage to you, if you are not using them then you are already behind the other guys bidding for the traffic.

Self serving ad networks are better than ever, the options they allow you are not built just because we think they sound cool or look great, they are there because the ad market is very competitive and we need to offer you better tools to help you better optimize your campaigns so you continue to spend. The more you make, the more volume you will buy from us, the higher you will bid for our traffic, the more we end up making on our traffic. Everyone wins.

Every ad network is different, offers different things. Get to know your ad network, get to know your product and build relations. Ask your dating site company for a payout bump to allow you to increase your spend to send them more leads/sales. A/B test different products. Just because dating site A pays you $5 per lead and dating site B pays you $4 per lead doesn't mean you will make less money with dating site B. You have to test everything.

Media buying is a grind but when it works, it REALLY works and you can scale things up real fast. I have saw guys go from spending $20 a day to spending $2,000 a day in a matter of months.

Ad networks and self serve platforms have made it very hard to compete for smaller affiliates who can't work on thin margins. Just so you know, the guys buying huge lots of traffic across those networks are doing the following.....

1. Making Dozens or hundreds of ads for each geo
2. Making their own landers, often going to whitelables (many landers for each geo) see notes at bottom**
3. Testing multiple offers in each geo

Most important...

4. Running very sophisticated stats programs. Most big media buyers receive APIs from programs and pull the data into their own stats. This lets them look at EACH ad zone, rotate multiple ads, landers, offers and view everything by EPC not just per site and ad zone, but also rotating combos of all of the above by day, time of day user age etc etc. If you can collect it or see it, you need to me optimizing for it!!!

** I know a media buyer who runs a branded whitelable. He uses the SAME name site WL no matter what offer he promotes. he buys huge volumes of ad space, often at break even or even a small loos at times. But because his sites are EVERYWHERE, he's built some name recognition and gets a LOT of type in (Im sure search too) He's willing to get 200 joins a day off the networks at break even because its allowed him to build up to the point where he gets maybe 10%+ of that amount every day from Type in, which is all profit. Obviously you would need to be buying massive amounts to copy this, but Im just letting you know who your bidding against. It makes it hard to buy when you need to run a 25%+ roi.
