    Kim Dotcom says Mega 3.0 will succeed as a nonprofit


    Kim Dotcom is on a mission to save the internet. He plans to start by launching a free cloud-storage service -- for the third time. Here, he talks exclusively to WIRED about why no one should trust his second file-hosting service Mega, his optimism for the future of an encrypted web, how a non-profit status will make Mega 3.0 a success, and why Hollywood is the ISIS of the internet?

    Last week German-born entrepreneur Kim Dotcom returned to the news in dramatic fashion, warning the world to steer well clear of the file-hosting service he once set up, Mega.

    Dotcom publicly claims Mega has been subject to a hostile takeover by Chinese investor Bill Liu, whose shares have subsequently been seized by the New Zealand government. As a result, he does not believe Mega customer data is secure anymore -- despite security being the number one reason Dotcom decided to set up the site following the seizure of Megashare by the FBI in 2012, due to alleged copyright infringement.

          “I’m not involved in Mega anymore. Neither in a managing nor in a shareholder capacity.           New Zealand authorities have placed 18.8% of the Kim Dotcom-founded cloud hosting service Mega under restraining order. The actions involve multi-millionaire William Yan, one of Mega's largest shareholders, who is alleged to be involved in money laundering. Mega itself is not suspected of wrong-doing.

          While facing an extradition to America for his role in the so-called “Megaupload Conspiracy”, Kim Dotcom launched a new cloud storage venture, Mega. Now, this new service is being indirectly linked to a crime ring by local authorities.

                                                      Since my time in Oz and NZ since 2002 I've acquired a few pure things deserving of Kims appreciation. This is one of many I'm still in contact with. I was the first and only over 10 years ago. He's still in NZ, married now with a child when we speak I clearly sense he wants any D he trusts me to point him to.

                                                                                      I don't know what he is charged for exactly, but as he has Finnish nationality he could move in here. We won't extradite people (it won't even be discussed) unless the maximum penalty for the crime is over 1 year in jail (in both countries). Though maximum penalty for harshest intangible crimes is 2 years in jail.

                                                                                          Off the top of my head I don't know every charge, but it is a laundry list of things. I had read before that he could get 20+ yrs if convicted of everything.

                                                                                          If he loses his extradition hearing they might take him into custody right then to keep him from fleeing, but I don't know that for sure. It won't shock me if he does flee.

                                                                                              He has lived a big life. Pretty much every business he ever gets involved with ends with him getting arrested so to me he is nothing more than a career criminal, but he does seem to live big and enjoy the money he gets his hands on.
