intelligence is innate, genetic. intellectual is earned through years of study & acquisition of a worldview. As such a person can be smart but not have a well rounded perspective of life.

to the contrary one can think they are an intellectual but lack intelligence, & it shows in their misperceptions on things, like when crockett tried to school dyna mo on electricity, & demonstrated he is clueless on what he is talking about.

Intelligent: Someone with full possesion of his capacity of intellection.

Intellectual: Someone with apparent full possesion of the intelligent's intellection.

ok proper reply then, generally speaking I'd sum it up as:

intelligent = knowing you don't know everything

intellectual = thinking you know everything

Intelligent-> smart, or do you need more synonyms for this?
Intellectual-> someone devoting time and effort to grow his knowledge beyond practical matters and is also interested about philosophical issues. Quite snobbish word.

Intelligent = smart
Intellectual = someone who is (sometimes) smarter than merely intelligent.

Hmm, interesting, some replies differ from each other more than I thought.

For me:

Inteligence has more to do with education, skill, technical training, etc.

An intellectual is more about reflection, meaning of concepts and ideologies, philosophy, etc.

Intelligent = doer
Intellectual = thinker

well that's a pretty unintelligent summation, intellectual thought and development has as much impact on how we live as technology does. science developed from natural philosophy. philosophers and intellectuals are dangerous because they can have great influence on lesser intellectuals, those people who are 'capable of doing something', can do a lot of damage or good.

i think the greatest scientists in history have also been highly intellectual, though not as gifted in language, which is the intellectual's tool of his trade.

The world is becoming more filled up with pseudo-intellectuals thanks to the Internet. Reading and becoming familiar with the ideas of intellectuals doesn't make one an intellectual himself no more than somebody who loves music, studies it and can understand it is a musician.

For my money...intelligent = is , intellectual = has /acquires.

People are born intelligent, but intellectual has a lot to do with the books you read, the choices you make and the people you surround yourself with. Like how some posters in this thread want to give off an air of authority, while others like me don't really care about such things

- What's the difference between intelligent and intellectual?
- The difference is very signifficant, - replied he. - I can only exlain it with the help of an allegory. Do you know what does this word mean?
I nodded.
- When you was very young, one hundred thousand people lived in this town, who were getting their wage for kissing a disgisting red dragon in the ass. You likely don't remeber him already...
I shook my head. Once in my young days I actually saw the red dragon, but has already forgotten how it would look like, - so now I still remember just my own fear.
- Naturally, that one hundred thousand hated the dragon and dreamed about getting ruled by a green toad who was waging a war against the dragon. So, the deal was done with the toad, they poisoned the dragon with the lipstick which they got from CIA and they began to live their life the new way.
- But how is all that story related to the intell...
- Wait, - he raised the hand. They thought under the toad their will be doing the same thing as before as their job, but the wage will be a dozen times more. But actually, it turned out that instead of thousands of kissers, only three professionals are needed nowadays, who, working 8/5, would continuously do deep blowjob to the toad. And who of that hundred of thousands would be chosen as one of these three is going to be decided after open competition, where they would have to diplay not just their highest professionalism, but also the ability of doing an optimistic smile with the edges of the mouth as they are doing their job.
- To be honest, I've already lost the thread...
- And the point is this: those one hundred thousand were called "intelligents". And these 3 are "intellectuals".

Being intellectual is the inclination to employ only deductive reasoning - logic - to the farthest extent possible in order to reach your conclusions. Being intelligent - as far as it relates to intellectualism: "intelligence" in the broadest sense has other meanings as well - is being good at doing the same.

in spite of what people tend to think, intelligence is not a fixed trait. You can raise and lower your IQ. More importantly, you can raise or lower your childs IQ. Further, we have a habit of confusing learned skills abilities which come after years and years of focused, dedicated and determined practice, with inordinate intelligence... when intelligence rarely plays a role at all.

Intelligent uses sound reasoning and deduction. Intellectual uses feelings and mostly unsound reasoning and concludes with the wrong deductions most of the time.

You may be able to stretch your IQ the way somebody can build up muscles even if you weren't genetically gifted but genes are powerful.

I just heard a new study linking the genes for longevity and intelligence and when I heard it I thought of highly intelligent people through history and they do seem to live long - Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson well over 80, Einstein 75, Darwin about 75

There's more to intelligence than what IQ can measure, Einstein's IQ was high but not freakishly high.

Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson well over 80, Einstein 75, Darwin about 75

That's exactly the opposite of what I read from psychologists, 'intelligence' includes feelings/intuition, the intellectual is a slave to facts/logic

That's an interesting conclusion and really breaks down the definition so that almost anyone can comprehend it.
