I think the better question is, that if this is a simulation, what is it simulating? Like in Matrix; a life that has really been there in the past? Something totally fantasy, or some could be simulation?

And what about other than humans? You know; we are not even the only intelligent specie on this Earth, not to speak of intelligent(ish). Is my dog plugged in too? What about all the flies buzzing out there? Or are we the "extras" in this simulation?

we tend to overshoot the idea of our importance and get indulged in certain ideas. not sure about this simulation theory but we are nowhere near mapping up the possibilities. we perceive 3d, we see barren rocky balls far from us but chances are, we are just a bunch of disposable, carbon-based barely-nothing in the universe's terms, while bigger things not perceivable on our level are going on.

why can't we just have worldwide orgies instead of making each others' life miserable?

If you believe computing power can be brought to the stage where it is possible to run a simulation of a planet then think about this.

Would a simulated object on that simulated planet know that it was a simulation, or would it just carry out the functions that it's simulation allows ?

A very basic simulation, Conway's Game of Life, follows simple and set rules. The cells have two possible states. Alive or Dead. When the simulation runs depending on the location of individual cells they either multiply or die.

Now take the Game of Life even further, given it's many years old, and apply modern computing principles to a more sophisticated simulation, one run on neural networks. Then ask the question, do the neural networks know they are carrying out a simulation ?

If it is possible that computing power can ever replicate complex organisms in a simulation, we can already simulate the conditions that apply in the laws of physics, then how does an organism know if it is in a simulation ?

i often think if we do find out the meaning of life/why we are here and the controllers would just reset the program hence wiping the program and starting again, maybe this is why so many civilizations have disappear in the past at least the ones we know of

When I first heard this theory I thought it was bullshit too - but then thought about it for a bit....The closer we get to being able to simulate reality, the more probable it becomes that we are actually living in a simulation and don't realize it.

Spot on.

To take the mind journey further, lets say there is no simulation right now.

However we do, at some point in the future, develop computing power sufficient to accurately simulate a universe and everything in it. We delve into parts of the simulation and find Earth and all those living on it at the exact point they launch a simulation of the universe and everything in it. There would be a simulation running inside a simulation and no simulated organism would know it was just a simulation, inside a simulation inside a real universe.

Besides, assuming that we are living digitally inside a simulation, would it be simulation anyways? If we truly are living there as independent organisms, evolving, etc., it isn't simulation, or at least we are not. As simulation simulates. Though simulation could be about just some physics "laws" and such. You know, throw in big bang or whatever and see what happens. But in neither case we wouldn't be simulated. We would be digital creatures, but not simulated. Real living things; living and dying as the rest.
