Hot or Not Australian Cultural References and Music

In order to balance out the Trumpism and shameless American navel gazing in this forum, I have taken it upon myself to share some uniquely Australian music and cultural references.

    Let's start.

Courtney Barnett is a singer who's making waves around the world, even though she sings about things in local Melbourne.

Preston is a Melbourne suburb about 9km north of the city. I go to Preston Market to get my hair cut.

Paul Kelly has been a well known Australian singer, songwriter, band member for years.

He also sings about Australian issues and places.

Normal Aussie battlers are a common theme in his songs and videos.

Midnight Oil frontman, Peter Garrett, who used to sing about Nuclear Disarmament and Australian social justice and environmental issues went on to become a member of Parliament - then betraying every word he sung.

As a minister he sealed the death warrant for the Great Barrier Reef, Opened another Uranium Mine and oversaw the biggest mining boom in Australian History.

      Great song though. Powerful images.

Powderfinger were one of Australia's most successful musical exports, yet nobody outside the country fully appreciated all the local references in their songs.

Australia is a big and diverse country and Powderfinger's music reflected that.

Something for Kate were also a very niche but iconic Australian indie band.

Monsters was amongst their most successful singles. I'm posting this one because I am in it as an extra and it shows a typical Melbourne laneway - although they're not usually this crazy.

This music video was shot in a laneway near Collins Street Melbourne one cold Saturday in 2000. There were 25 extras, my girlfriend and I amongst them - we ran up that lane about 30 times during the day.

I loved a lot of the Auzzie classic rock from back in the 70`s and 80`s, particularly this band....

                    Still awesome.

Not a lot of love for Rolf Harris in Australia anymore.

He might as well not exist, probably better for his victims if he didn't.

                            Spectrum from 1971.

The first parts of this clip were shot near Sunbury which is now fully developed as a housing estate. Then there are other views of Melbourne including Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne the year it opened.

You know if it wasn't for the Australian involvement in Vietnam, the USA would have lost the war a lot sooner than it did. The Special Air Service basically saved American's asses time and time again in some of the most legendary battles during the Vietnam war.
